At long last, tomorrow is Mathematician Christmas, better known as Pi Day – an unofficial holiday on which people around the incalculable circumference of the globe celebrate by, well, eating pie.Pi Day comes around every Mar 14, not because that was Pythagoras’ birthday (we don’t know when that was), but because it’s the 13th day of the fourth month, corresponding with the first three digits of the infinitely long series of digits that is the number pi (3.14... etc, etc.).Unfortunately, there are not an infinite number of pies in Beijing, but there are enough that you should be able to grab a slice in time to have it in your mouth tomorrow afternoon at exactly 3.14pm.

Once you’ve got your pie, calculate its approximate surface area using its radius, or just eat it. Whatever you do, do not attempt to construct a square with the same area as your pie. With that out of the way, here are the pies

Hutong’er Pie

Once slinging pie from their humble spot on Fensiting Hutong, this bakery no longer has a physical store, but they are selling through WeChat. Special for Pi Day, they’ve come out with the New B Pie, a savory circle with handmade beef balls, mushroom, onion, potato, cheese, and pickled cucumber, going for RMB 260 for a 9-incher. To get in contact, search WeChat ID: Hutongerpie2017

Spatula

The freshly opened Spatula in 5L Hotel isn’t yet selling pies via their menu on JSS Delivery, Meituan, and Sherpas, but there are some off-menu pies that you can order through WeChat with at least one day's advance notice, including shepard's lamb pie, cottage beef pie, and chicken pot pie. Spatula will be preparing limited portions of pie on Pi Day, so stop by for a try, or to order online, search WeChat ID: Mistvixen.

The Pie Chucker

Another WeChat-based bakery with a specialty in savory pies, The Pie Chucker is selling tempting pans like Steak & Ale, Meat & Potato, Scotch Pie, and Chicken & Mushroom, among others. For the sweet tooths, there are a couple of fruit crumbles on the menu as well. All pies are between RMB 25-35, and free delivery is offered in Beijing for orders over RMB 250. To order, search WeChat ID: thepiechucker

Secret Sucre

Feeling fancy? Nothing like a French pie to satisfy. Located off Baiziwan Lu, Secret Sucre produces a number of specialty pastries and cakes, but their top pie is something a bit unusual – an orange pie. With a flakey crust, perfectly colored topper, and orange peel garnish, they certainly get points for presentation. Available for order on Meituan.

JiangMaiTang

Selling pie by-the-slice, JiangMaiTang in Central Park Plaza carries a number of both sweet pies and savory quiches. For a sit down with pie and coffee, it doesn’t get much better than this.
