Beijing Pops: The Leehom Wang Infidelity Scandal Saga
Feeling
left out when your Chinese colleagues are gossiping about a trending
star? Puzzled by those glamorous Chinese faces in subway ads, but can't
even tell who they are? Beijing Pops will help you get through it all with the latest pop culture and celebrity news.
On Friday, Dec 17, just two days after Leehom Wang announced his split from wife Jinglei Lee, Lee shared her own lengthy letter via Weibo saying that penning the letter was the hardest decision she's ever had to make.
“I
thought we would forever be a family when I walked down the aisle with
you. You were 10 years older than me and wanted many kids, so you kept
pushing me to have more babies. I have gone through dramatic changes
during the pregnancy but I have faced these challenges all alone,” Lee
wrote.
Lee had three babies with Wang during their eight-year marriage
Lee
also directly accused Wang of infidelity, saying that she long believed
she was Wang's "one and only," despite finding out that he had "so many
friends with benefits in different cities" and "spent an entire night
partying with one of them after a concert in Shanghai."
Lee
continued, "You said you were unable to control yourself. When I wanted
to cut off the relationship, you had been calling me for weeks and
promised that you would never do such things again."
Yumi from By2 Band was rumored to be one of Wang's friends with benefits.
Following
two days of silence, on Sunday night Wang finally fired back at his
ex-wife's accusations, saying, "It is the hardest day ever of my life. I
am facing a dilemma in that if I choose to fight back, it will not look
good to the mother of my three kids, but if I don't say a word,
everybody will believe what's happening is true."
Apparently,
however, one battle he thought worth fighting was the allegations of
infidelity, writing, "I can say with absolute certainty that I have
never cheated on my ex-wife before."
He described their marriage
as a living hell, saying that he constantly lived in fear and going so
far as to suggest that Lee coerced him into marriage with her pregnancy.
"We were not quite there for marriage when she got pregnant and
threatened that I would never be able to see her and our baby anymore if
I didn't marry her," Wang said in the post.
Wang wrote that the pair consulted five marriage counselors to no avail
He
also dismissed several claims Lee made about their marital properties.
"Lee isn't someone who is not going to take anything from me. She
demanded about RMB 150 million that includes the Bel Air Los Angeles
real estate and stocks," Wang said.
Unfortunately for Wang,
however, his attempts to garner sympathy proved unsuccessful. "I am
laughing my ass off! In a marriage that was brimming with nothing but
nightmares, he managed to produce three babies!" wrote one netizen.
"He knew what kind of responsibilities he should take without wearing a condom!" said another.

Lee's rebuttal
Lee
rebutted Wang's version of the story once again: "You probably have so
many friends with benefits that you don't even remember anything. Need I
mention the time when your rumored girlfriend watched the same movie at
the same theater when you took me out on a date?"
Lee also
pointed out that the Los Angeles housing property and stock investment
are original assets under the names of both parties, not assets that
Wang would give to her after the divorce.
Lee noted that the Los Angeles properties and stocks are already under both names
"The
house that I am living in with my children is only temporarily loaned
to me and you expect me to return it to you 18 years later," Lee added.
Previously, Wang told Lee that he would loan the condo to her for 18 years, but agreed to give her the house if she apologized and told the media she was not thinking clearly
In
his latest post on Weibo, which came this past Monday, Wang said that
he is ready to temporarily withdraw from the entertainment business and
spend some time with his parents and children. "I have failed to
successfully manage my marriage and I have caused troubles to my family
in that I didn't present an ideal image that a perfect idol should have.
It was my fault completely," Wang conceded.
In addition, Wang
mentioned that they will have joint custody of the children and that he
will transfer the condo to Lee's name. Likewise, when asked whether she
would still file a lawsuit against Wang in light of his apology, Lee
said she will not consider litigation.
Several of Wang's die-hard fans have called Lee's posts fake, writing, "Leehom, we will support you no matter what!”
However,
the majority of people have a different perspective. "I have been a fan
of yours for years and I am very disappointed! You have been faking a
positive image this entire time!" wrote one particularly disappointed
fan.
Another decided to attack Lee, writing, "Don't make it sound
like Lee is someone who is so naïve. She obviously knows what kind of
person Wang is but still chose to marry him. What is she looking for in a
guy?"
Others reacted to the comment by coming to Lee's defense,
"She has raised three babies with Wang. She deserves whatever she
wants!"
"You said you will temporarily leave the entertainment
industry? Don't think that's the case. Say bye to the business forever!"
one netizen said angrily.
Netizens' reactions on Weibo
Wang's
perfect facade of a good-looking, well-educated man with a successful
music career was shattered by public opinion in a matter of days, with
numerous companies dropping him after the scandal broke.
"It is not Lee who ruined Wang's career, but Wang himself," said one.
Is
it time for Wang to kiss goodbye to his career? Do you think the public
should leave celebrities' personal lives aside to focus on their music?
