More Places Offering Fourth Covid Shots for Foreigners
Following an announcement at the end of 2022 that Beijing would be rolling out second Covid booster shots for its citizens, the city has now formally extended that service to foreign residents, according to a post from the city's foreign affairs office.
According to a WeChat post released by the official channel 北京外事 běijīng wàishì, foreign nationals in Beijing who have already received their first booster -- and are medically eligible for the vaccine -- can receive a second booster on a voluntary basis.
Who is eligible? First and foremost, most experts say that boosters are unnessary in the short term for those that have recently had Covid, because most will carry antibodies for several months after recovering from the disease. Various local hospitals contacted for this article said that you should wait a minimum of three months before getting a booster, while some said they won't administer the vaccine to anyone who has had Covid in the past six months.
The WeChat notice also contained a comprehensive list of those spots that are currently offering the boosters. However, after calling around, we've found that some say they have yet to roll out the service, so best to call in advance if you're planning to book the jab.
Also, for those who still haven’t gotten their first booster shots, most sources told us the first booster shot is also available, under the same eligibility qualifications.
Keep in mind: people with symptoms of fever, dry cough, fatigue, anosmia (loss of sense of smell), hypogeusia (reduced ability to taste sweet, sour, bitter, or salty things), nasal congestion, runny nose, sore thorat, conjunctivitis, and diarrhea are encoraged to postpone vaccination until they recover.
