Museum of Contemporary Art Yinchuan (MOCA Yinchuan) is honored to present the exhibition Echo of Water from April 15 to July 18, 2023.

For thousands of years, the Yellow River has been nurturing human civilization and telling its own profound stories. With expression of artistic languages and the presentation of works and their resonances, this exhibition wants to gather the response and feedback of the spiritual connotation of the Yellow River culture. By capturing the interpretation of different cultural and historical dimensions, and incorporating them into the continuous resonance of the exhibition space alongside the Yellow River, it would like to raise the echo of the river. Every microscopic perspective of each artist would become a part of an abstract river. The audience, pacing along this river, may abandon their familiar approaches for appreciating exhibitions, transcend the shackles of time, space and social groups, and then hear the echo of water that eliminate the estrangement between language and perspective.

The exhibition is divided into two sections. This first section Dialogue focuses on two well-known and fascinating elements of the intangible cultural heritage of the Yellow River Basin--shadow play and paper cutting. In addition to the precious original works of shadow play of Qing Dynasty; Wangshi Shadow Play by national-level inheritor of intangible heritage Wang Tianwen; and the rare paper cutting originals by folk craft master Ku Shulan; the exhibition also invites Wu Jian’an, a famous contemporary artist who has cooperated with Wang Tianwen for more than 15 years, and Chen Fenwan, a top paper cutting artist born in the 1990s to conduct a dialogue between folk art and contemporary art in the exhibition hall. In this way, MOCA Yinchuan would like to raise dialogue and inquiry in close communication, seeking for identity in differences like a torrent of water. It will demonstrate how traditional art is passed down from generation to generation, and how it impacts on and integrates with contemporary art.

The second section is Waterfront. Living by water and choosing water for rest is the basic rule that human beings have followed for survival and development since ancient times. In this exhibition, “waterfront” carries two meanings. One is close to the water source, as artists have come to the bank of the Yellow River while MOCA Yinchuan is built near the river as well. The second is facing the water, which begins with the concrete shape of water and appreciating its agility and changefulness, and then extends to exploring the origin of civilization and human evolution, collecting hydrological data and drawing acoustic images at present day. What “waterfront” conveys actually is different in ancient and modern times and varies from people to people. However, it is precisely because of the various observations, understandings and expressions by various perspectives that such multi-dimensional works are collected and the “echo of water” that continuous strikes directly at the connotation of life.

This sections will present the works of Cai Yaling, Chen Baoyang, Chen Qi, Chen Shuxia, Zhai Yitao, Sang Huoyao, Wang Shaoqiang, Zhang Haichao & Li Kun, Zhang Kechun, Zhang Xiaotao & Zhang Wuliang, Limage Studio and onformative Studio. Based on the artists’ observations of rivers and experiences along the water, the exhibition presents new media, digital art, photography, painting and other forms of works, which either depict the form of rivers, focus on ecological protection, wander through ancient myths, or show the connection between “water” and the lives of artists, as well as thoughts and sentiments brought about by the water...

Today, “water” appears not only in the form of material, but can be transformed into a series of operable and editable digital languages such as data, formulas, algorithms and coding, which also inspired us in curating this exhibition. We want to create a field that is not only visible, but can be thought of, felt, and known, where people gather as if they are standing in a wave of water which rippled outward from themselves. While drawing inspiration from the Yellow River, we shall not be limited to this, but extend our concerns to all the waters on Earth. As all the waters of the world shall converge into one, we would like to integrate the individual experiences of artists, and provide a platform for them to seek traditions, pay attention to ecology, or walk among mountains and rivers...We shall finally see each other in this water, and echoes are born in the encounters of this confluence.

The exhibition runs from April 15th

to July 18th, 2023. Stay tuned !
