Speech by Professor Mee-mann Chang after Winning the L’Oréal-UNESCO for Women in Science Awards 2018

Bonsoir, Messieurs, Mesdames, Mesdames, Messieurs. Don’t expect too much from me. Je ne parle (pas) francais, je peux lire un peu…when it’s necessary, mais je n’ai parle pas.

I’m immensely honored to be awarded this year’s L’Oréal-UNESCO for Women in Science Award. But compared with the laureates from the past years and this year and many worthy candidates, I truly, [am] humbled, I should say, to receive this award with deep appreciation and gratitude.

On this occasion, it is impossible for me not to reflect on my career in Vertebrate Paleontology. I started to study Paleontology some 60 years ago when I was a student in the Lomonosov Moscow State University. But at that time, my choice of career was even not my own; it was arranged – much as an arranged marriage. We even have a saying in Chinese, “To get married first, then have the courtship.” In Chinese, we say “Xian Jie Hun, Hou Lian Ai” Some of you, I think, understand Chinese. I want to thank my Russian and Swedish mentors…for guiding my early years.

I want to thank all my colleagues – past and present – in China and elsewhere for their help to me over years. And I also want to thank my family for their support over the years, especially my daughter, for leaving her to her grandmother when she was only one month old. When she came back to me, she was ten, and she never complained. And finally, thank all of you for this wonderful evening.

Thanks. Merci and Xie Xie.
