Org. Setting and Reporting
The internship is located in the Crime Research Section, Research and Trend Analysis Branch, Division for Policy Analysis and Public Affairs (DPA), United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC), Vienna (Austria). Duration: The envisaged starting date is at the beginning of February 2021 and the duration is an initial period of 24 weeks with possibility of extension to a maximum of six months subject to the needs of the office and the availability of the intern.
The intern will work under the direct supervision of the Wildlife Crime Research Officer for the Unit.
The internship is UNPAID and full-time and interns work five days per week (40 hours).

In the context of the COVID-19 pandemic, applicants may be requested to undertake the internship remotely in view of constraints regarding visa issuance, international travel and access to UN premises.
Applicants must be willing and prepared to undertake the internship remotely for a part or the entirety of the internship.
Responsibilities
The intern shall undertake the following duties as part of the research work on the World Wildlife Crime Report which may include, but are not limited to:
Collect information and literature on wildlife trafficking trends at the international level;
Assist with quantitative and qualitative data compiling, quality checking, entry, and management;
Help develop data collection tools and fieldwork research plans for species-specific consultancies;
Analyze data to define trends in wildlife trafficking;
Other relevant assignments as required.
The current research avenues for the World Wildlife Crime Report, with which the selected candidate could get involved are:
1)Research on the displacement of ivory, pangolin, and rosewood trafficking to Vietnam;
2)Research on the emergence of Nigeria as a transit hub for various wildlife trafficking products;
3)Research on jaguar, reptile, or songbird trade in Latin and South America;
4)Species-specific research on the illegal trade in tiger parts and other species (including marine and plant species) to be determined during the research design phase of the report. This could include but is not limited to:
a.Analysis of illegal wildlife product prices along the trafficking chain through court records or media sources;
b.Analysis of wildlife crime arrests and prosecutions and the laws under which they occurred.

Education
To qualify for an internship with the United Nations Internship Programme, the following conditions must be met:
•Applicants must meet one of the following requirements: (a) be enrolled in, or have completed, a graduate school programme (second university degree or equivalent, or higher); (b) Be enrolled in, or have completed, the final academic year of a first university degree programme (minimum bachelor’s level or equivalent). (OFFICIAL WRITTEN PROOF FROM THE UNIVERSITY SUPPORTING ONE OF THE ABOVE POSSIBILITIES MUST BE ATTACHED TO THE INSPIRA APPLICATION);
•Be computer literate in standard software applications;
•Have a demonstrated keen interest in the work of the United Nations and have a personal commitment to the ideals of the Charter; and
•Have a demonstrated ability to successfully interact with individuals of different cultural backgrounds and beliefs, which include willingness to try and understand and be tolerant of differing opinions and views.”
Knowledge of MS Word, Excel, Power Point is essential. Studies in the field of social sciences, economics or criminology is required. Familiarity in the area of crime research (or comparable study area) would be an asset.
Languages
English and French are the working languages of the United Nations. Fluency in English, i.e. oral and written proficiency is required. Knowledge of another official United Nations language is an advantage.

- An explanation of your interest in the work of UNODC.
