Kolawole Omole:

Prof. Justin Lin is a great thinker and a renowned Economist. He is persistent, extremely hardworking, committed to China's economic development in all facets and patriotic in words and actions.

Having attended his lectures in the classroom, as well as watched and listened to him remotely on television during several public policy dialogues, I conclude that Prof. Lin is an intellectual par excellence. Prof. Lin is down-to-earth with good sense of humour and I would rather say that he has an eye for discovering and training talented individuals.

I met Prof. Lin in Nigeria, May 2016 and I am particularly grateful to him for recommending me to study for Master Degree at the Institute of South South Cooperation and Development (ISSCAD), Peking University. However, I saw Prof. Lin, on September, 2016, for the second time at ISSCAD opening ceremony and orientation where he said to me that "Kola, you are persistent." He said this because I sent count less e-mails to him during my admission processing period. Usually, people view persistent individuals as been too driven, stubborn and obsessive but Prof. Justin never got tired of my numerous e-mails, in fact he replied to every e-mail. I had been willing and working tirelessly to study aboard since I left college in 2010 but Prof. Lin made this dream come true in 2016, a time I consider most suitable. I really appreciate his kind gesture.

According to Prof. Lin, a theory is for explaining a phenomenon and improving the phenomenon and only if action according to the theory produces the expected improvement is the theory true for the phenomenon. He also advocate that the government in a market economy must be proactive, responsible and intelligent in the process of economic development. This probably culminated to his “New structural Economics” model of economic development where he emphasized that the economic structure of acountry is endogenous to its factor endowments which is changeable over time with emphasis on technological transfer and industrial upgrading. This political economy philosophy of his, will remain in delible in my mind.

Prof. Lin is also passionate about the economic development of Africa and has done rigorous research about how Africa’s economy can take-off which I think will be very useful to any serious government on the continent.

Prof. Lin is widely loved by students and he is indeed a role model. I think China and the outside world will continue to benefit from his immense knowledge and wealth of experience.

On this note, I wish our distinguished Professor, happy 30th Anniversary of teaching in China after he obtained his Ph.D at the prestigious University of Chicago.

Satria Sambijantoro

I attended Prof Lin Yifu's class of Structural Economics this semester I have always been fascinated by his breadth of economics wisdom. Every week, there will always be new economics knowledge to be gleaned upon. Every class, we always learn new things from his experiences in undertaking research studies and development projects in many countries around the world.

In the classroom, we like to joke that he is similar to a "walking encyclopedia" who seems to know the macroeconomics state and statistics of every country in the world, which heutilized to great effect every time he answered our questions.

As a finance journalist in Indonesia, I have interviewed numerous important global leaders and economists and, truthfully speaking, Prof. Lin is definitely in the top three most intellectual persons I've ever met, alongside Joseph E. Stiglitz, who happens to be a former chief economist of the World Bank as well, and Sri MulyaniIndrawati, who is the current Indonesian finance minister. I know certainly that Prof. Lin, while preferring to work humbly in the background, is the brain behind China's successful economic reforms. It's a privilege to be able to learn from him inperson.

When we go back to our respective hometowns, we would apply the knowledge taught by Prof. Lin to develop our country. I wish Prof. Lin good health so that he would live long enough to see the success stories of his students and their countries.
