从百老汇到北大，老戏骨谈演员的诞生与成长

但是聚光灯背后，一个演员的日常又是怎样的呢？戏剧表演和电影表演有什么区别？演员真的是一个高薪职业吗？既能学英语，又能看戏剧的好办法是什么？
But what it’s really like to be an actor? What is the difference between performing on stage and on TV? In general, does being an actor mean wealth and fame? What is the best way to learn English and enjoy the theater?
百老汇导演Joe Graves从艺40余年，演绎过几乎所有的莎士比亚戏剧，他执导的经典剧目，多次被搬上中国的戏剧舞台，其中包括中文版《音乐之声》、《我，堂吉诃德》。
Having been an actor for over 40 years, Joe Graves acted in basically all Shakespearean plays. He has also directed many famous productions in China, such as The Sound of Music and Man of La Mancha.
2002年来到中国，Joe不光在北大教课，还活跃于舞台。他是北大外国戏剧与电影研究所的艺术总监。他的很多学生已经成为戏剧老师、导演、编剧或者演员，横跨中美戏剧界。
A teacher at Peking University and an actor on the stage, Graves has been living in China since 2002, dedicating his life to introducing Shakespearean plays to China. He is the artistic director of PKU’s Institute of World Theater and Film. “A lot of my students have gone on to become drama teachers, actors, directors, writers here in China, some in America,” Joe said.
“很多人都觉得演员都很漂亮，又富有，实际上90%的演员最后都穷困潦倒。”
“Most people know actors most from movie stars or television stars. It leads people to think that all ‘successful’ actors are wealthy and beautiful,” Graves said. But the overall picture is much more polarized. “The reality is that 90 percent of actors die in poverty.”
“大明星们真的能挣很多钱，但是大部分演员靠表演是无法维持生计的。”Joe说，投身于表演事业，就意味着风险。你很可能不会有稳定的收入。
With only a small group of actors making big money, one should be much more clearheaded when it comes to career choices. “So to dedicate your life to film or television or the theater is a kind of risky life, in terms of financial security.”
Joe说有的天才演员，一眼就能看出来。但有些演员的才华，需要很多年才会显露。“我们永远无法对他人的能力，或者他们未来的能力下断言。”
“I have seen people very early on that I thought, ‘Gosh, they shouldn’t be doing this’,” he said. “And twenty years later, I work with them again and suddenly they become very good! So it’s impossible to say with final authority, to make that kind of judgment about somebody else’s abilities.”
Joe还对中国戏曲颇有研究。曾经多次将西方戏剧和中国戏曲结合起来。“我觉得中国戏曲非常美。如果你对中国文化稍有了解，就能发现戏曲带来的美感和震撼。”
“I’m very familiar with several Chinese opera forms and I find them personally very beautiful,” he said. “They are really quite beautiful and quite powerful once you begin to even have a smattering of understanding of what’s going on.”
