Who's Open? Who's Closed During CNY? Here's how to find out...

EatForCharity InBene 2023-09-18

Shopping during the holiday period can be a headache and it's not always clear who is open and who is not. In fact, a lot of restaurants on EatForCharity will be taking some sort of holiday during this period or at the very least operating under shortened hours. The list of changes is way too long for us to share here; however, we're pleased to let you know that EatForCharity will be updated in real-time and it's very easy to check these when browsing the platform.

Simply click the "Filters" button and select "Open Now" and you'll only see those that are open at the time of browsing.

You can also use this filter to search for dish types, like vegetarian or vegan, or to search for "dine-in" specials so you can still support your favorite charities even while dining out.

Holiday Delivery Rate Surcharges

Please note that in order to properly compensate delivery drivers who choose to work over the holiday, and ensure that we have an adequate supply of drivers to deliver our orders, the delivery companies are charging a delivery surcharge during the holiday period. You will see this listed as a "CNY Delivery Surcharge" on your checkout page and receipts, if applicable. Please note thatPeak Hours are between 11am and 1pm. After Hours are between 9pm and 6am. Avoiding ordering during these times can help lower delivery fees as well.

Holiday Hours

EatForCharity Customer Service will also be operating on a slightly shorter holiday schedule during the Chinese New Year as well. From January 31st to February 8th, EFC Customer Service Hours will be from 10am to 10pm.

Is EatForCharity a Charity?

We've been asked quite a few times about whether EatForCharity is a charity, how much we donate, who we donate to, what it costs consumers, etc., so we thought we'd clarify with a few bullet points that explain a bit about how our donations work.

  1. EatForCharity is not a charity itself. It is a fundraising project started by the teams at SHP, ShekouDaily, and friends to help support local charities.

  2. Like all other food ordering platforms (i.e, Meituan, Ele-me, etc.), EatForCharity charges a commission to shops for the orders it receives for them; which serves as the platform's operating revenue.

  3. The commissions charged by food ordering companies offering this type of service are not standard. They vary from company to company and can be as high as 35%.

  4. EatForCharity charges one of the lowest commissions around, starting at just 8%, as we also want to support these businesses by keeping their costs down.

  5. The first week of each month, EatForCharity gives 25% of its revenue from the previous month (the aforementioned commission) to charity.

  6. When customers place orders on EatForCharity, they are given the option at checkout, to choose which charity they would like EatForCharity to give their portion of its donations to; a minimum of 2% of the order subtotal. This is not something that is charged extra to shoppers so you pay the same as you would on any other platform. However, you are given the option to add an additional donation as well, if you'd like.

  7. A list of the charity beneficiaries that customers can choose from can be found by clicking the "Browse Charities" link in the header or footer of EatForCharity.cn or by clicking the "Charities" button in the footer of the EatForCharity mini-program (current list shown below as well).

  8. Charities themselves have direct access to real-time reports of the order amounts where they were chosen as a beneficiary so they can see at any time how much money is going towards their cause.

  9. We are often asked for proof that we are making the donations as promised. Reporters have come to verify and footage of many of those can be found in the videos on our "EatForCharity in the News" page (QR code below). You're welcome to contact any of the charities we donate to as well to hear directly from them about the donations we send them. For example, here's a recent comment shared by Karuna Rescue in our group.
