警方在发文找人时用的是“WANTED”一词,wanted通常是表示(因犯罪)被警方通缉的,英文解释为“being searched for by the police because of a crime”,举个🌰:

He's a wanted man.

NYPD find UK couple who lost ring during romantic proposal

Police in New York have found the couple who got engaged in Times Square on Friday but lost the ring down a grate.

grate

Wikipedia给出的英文解释为“A horizontal metal grill through which water, ash, or small objects can fall, while larger objects cannot.”

它告诉我们grate可以指“(壁炉的)金属炉架,炉箅,炉栅”,英文解释为“A grate is a framework of metal bars in a fireplace, which holds the wood or coal. The metal bars and frame that hold the wood, coal etc in a fireplace.”

此外,grate还可以作动词,比如表示“使人烦恼,使人难受,使烦躁”,英文解释为“When a noise or behaviour grates, it annoys you.”

It's the way she's always talking about herself - it just grates on me.

还可以指“磨碎,擦碎(食物)”,英文解释为“to rub cheese, vegetables etc against a rough or sharp surface in order to break them into small pieces”,如:grated cheese 磨碎的奶酪。

The NYPD tweeted on Sunday that arrangements were being made to return the ring to the pair, who are from the UK. CCTV images showed the couple unsuccessfully trying to retrieve the piece of jewellery. But police officers later managed to rescue and clean it.

NYPD & CCTV

NYPD:

The City of New York Police Department, commonly known as the NYPD, is the primary law enforcement and investigation agency within the five boroughs of New York City.

CCTV:

CCTV, also known as video surveillance, is the use of video cameras to transmit a signal to a specific place, on a limited set of monitors.

The BBC has been in touch with the couple and understands they are from Peterborough, Cambridgeshire in the UK. They have been named by NYPD as John and Daniella, who said they had now returned home.

The footage was taken just before midnight on Friday and was released by police shortly after.

footage

Footage of a particular event is a film of it or the part of a film which shows this event.”

It doesn't show the moment the man pops the question but we do see him getting down on one knee in an attempt to find the ring.

pop the question

表示“求婚”,英文解释为“to ask someone to marry you”,举个🌰:

So did he pop the question, then?

She politely declined his proposal of marriage.

John and Daniella have just got engaged.

His fiancée, who police confirmed said "Yes", puts her hands to her face when she realises what has happened. She crouches down next to him, trying to help but they are unsuccessful. The man then lies down on the floor by the grate, trying to reach the piece of jewellery but again they are unable to retrieve it.

crouch (down)

crouch /kraʊtʃ/ 表示“蹲下;蹲伏”,英文解释为“to lower your body close to the ground by bending your knees completely”,举个🌰:

He crouched in the shadows near the doorway.

If you squat, you lower yourself toward the ground, balancing on your feet with your legs bent.

He squatted down and examined it.

Officers from the New York Police Department clearly have a romantic side and, more importantly, access to the grate, so could get it out quite easily. Well-wishers were quick respond on social media. One wrote: "I hope the couple is grate-ful."
