On January 17, a promotional video for Alibaba Pictures' upcoming film Peppa Pig Celebrates Chinese New Year was released on the film's official Weibo account. This video quickly went viral and has been widely shared on Weibo as well as WeChat. Titled What's Peppa, the film is centered around Li Yubao, an old man who lives in rural area alone. After learning that his 3-year-old grandson who lives in Beijing wants “Peppa” as a Chinese new year gift, Li is confused and went on a hilarious yet touching journey of finding out what exactly is “Peppa.”
picture
It was voted the year's best picture.
Let's go to the pictures tonight.
hilarious
表示“极好笑的,极有趣的;令人捧腹大笑的”,英文解释为“If something is hilarious, it is extremely funny and makes you laugh a lot.”,举个🌰:
We thought it was hilarious when we first heard about it.
Chinese stocks connected to Peppa Pig surged after a promotional clip for a film featuring the cartoon character went viral. Banbao Co., which is authorized to use the Peppa Pig image on its toys, surged by the 10 percent limit, while toymaker Alpha Group Co. jumped as much as 7.3 percent. Wei Yi, an analyst with Kaiyuan Securities Co., said the gains are driven by speculators and likely to be short-lived. The movie trailer features a man discovering who Peppa Pig is and then making a gift to give his grandson for the Lunar New Year festival. The holiday begins on Feb. 5, and marks the start of the Year of the Pig.
speculator
表示“投机者”,英文解释为“someone who buys goods, property, shares in a company etc, hoping that they will make a large profit when they sell them”,如:a New York property speculator 纽约的一名房地产投机者。
short-lived
表示“短暂的”,英文解释为“Something that is short-lived does not last very long.”
Your happiness was short-lived.
The show, which was first introduced in China in 2015, is centered on the themes of “friendship, coordination, and feelings,” according to Nick Jr., the children's television channel. Each five-minute episode is humorous and lively, the family is close and loving, and there are no villains.
A Peppa Pig tattoo.
Peppa Pig, the British porcine phenomenon that's taken kids by storm all around the world, was first introduced to China on state broadcaster CCTV in 2015. Peppa, the main character of the show, however, really took off in China last year on live-streaming services such as Douyin (also known as Tik Tok) and Kuaishou. But Peppa's rise in China also came with a makeover—she became a shehuiren, a slang term for “gangster,” and inadvertently a symbol for those who want to live a life free of constraints and societal pressures.
porcine
形容词,表示“像猪的;猪的”,英文解释为“looking like or relating to pigs”。
gangster
意思是“歹徒;犯罪团伙成员”,英文解释为“a member of an organized group of violent criminals”。
Shehuiren literally means "society person," but in the online context, it refers to people who run counter to the mainstream value and are usually poorly educated with no stable job. They are unruly slackers roaming around and the antithesis of the young generation the Party tries to cultivate.
slacker
表示“懒惰的人,偷懒者”,英文解释为“someone who is lazy and does not do all the work they should – used to show disapproval”。
antithesis
表示“正相反,相对;对立面”,英文解释为“the complete opposite of something”。
Tattoos of “gangster” Peppa started to proliferate on Chinese social media, depicting the pig adorning gold necklaces, sunglasses, and tattoos, often with a cigarette in her mouth. The saying “Get your Peppa Pig tatt, shout out to your frat,” also became popular.
proliferate
表示“激增,扩散”,英文解释为“if something proliferates, it increases quickly and spreads to many different places”,举个🌰:
Computer courses continue to proliferate.
Get your Peppa Pig tatt, shout out to your frat.

A wryly funny Peppa scene is all over Twitter now, featuring a phone conversation between the titular pig and her friend Suzy Sheep. Peppa can't whistle, and she's relieved to find out Suzy can't, either. Until Sally tries whistling for the first time and discovers she can do it after all. Peppa hangs up immediately.
