Dylan McDermott and Maggie Q Split Following 4-Year Engagement

The pair starred opposite one another on CBS crime drama Stalker and got engaged in early 2015

star opposite

此处opposite为介词,通常用法:play/star/appear opposite sb,表示在影片中“和某人联袂主演,和某人演对手戏”,英文解释为“to act with someone in a film, especially as the two main characters”,如:a comedy in which he stars opposite Maggie Q 他和李美琪联袂主演的一部喜剧片。

名词engagement,表示“婚约;订婚期间”,英文解释为“an agreement between two people to marry, or the period of time they are engaged”举个🌰:

Have you heard? KangKang and Jane are getting engaged.

Dylan McDermott and Maggie Q have split. Four years after the American Horror Story actor and Designated Survivor actress got engaged, the couple is going their separate ways, a source confirms to PEOPLE. Reps for McDermott and Q have not commented.

split/split up表示“分手;离婚;决裂”,英文解释为“if people split, they end a marriage or relationship with each other”举个🌰:

The band split three years ago.

go one's (own) separate ways

表示“分道扬镳,各奔东西”,英文解释为“If two or more people go their separate ways, they stop being together.”

In 2001 the group disbanded and went their separate ways.

They first sparked relationship rumors in fall 2014, when McDermott, 57, and Q, 39, were spotted getting cosy while shopping in Brentwood.

cosy

可以表示“温暖舒适的”,英文解释为“a place that is cosy is small, comfortable, and warm”举个🌰:

The living room was warm and cosy.

也可以指关系或者对话的“友好的,融洽的,亲近/亲密的”,英文解释为“(of a relationship or conversation) intimate and relaxed.”

In October of that year, a show insider told PEOPLE that the Stalker castmates were romantically involved. Just months later, the pair was engaged — he proposed after seven weeks — and Q was sporting a massive diamond on her ring finger.

propose除了表示“提议,建议”,此处表示向某人“求婚”,英文解释为“to ask someone to marry you, especially in a formal way”举个🌰:

One month later, Nikita star Q told PEOPLE that they were “fishing for dates” to tie the knot.

tie the knot

So when are you two going to tie the knot?

The word knot has been associated with marriage since very old times, with the first known occurrence in 1225. It is not clear whether the knot refers an actual knot being tied in marriage ceremonies or it is just a symbolic reference to two people being united. This exact expression was first recorded in 1717 by an English poet, Matthew Prior in his poem “Alma; or, The Progress of the Mind.” Source: theidioms.com

At the time, the duo was busy with their careers — including new movies in the works for both — which is why they hadn't settled on a wedding date.

duo

duo /ˈdjuːəʊ/表示“(在一起表演的)一对艺人,搭档;形影不离的两个人”,英文解释为“two people who perform together or are often seen together”,如:the comedy duo KangKang and Jane 喜剧搭档里康康和简。

fish & settle on

上文的fish作动词,熟词僻义,表示“搜寻,查找”(to try to find something, using your fingers to look for it),为这段中出现的they hadn't settled on a wedding date作了铺垫,始终没有确定结婚日子,settle on表示“选定”,英文解释为“If you settle on a particular thing, you choose it after considering other possible choices.”

He finally settled on a Tesla. It's the ideal car for him.

So, yeah, [it's] because of work,Hawaii-born Q said in March 2015, “and … because you gotta balance everything.” Last year, McDermott opened up to PEOPLE about his relationship with Q.

The cool thing is if you trust life and open yourself up to good things, good things can happen,” he said. “[Maggie] took my breath away.

take sb's breath away

惊叹”,英文解释为“to be extremely beautiful or surprising”举个🌰:

The beauty of the Taj Mahal took my breath away.
