(The New York Times):Anchors From Fox and Chinese State TV Hold Live Debate on Trade.

After days of sparring on Twitter, Trish Regan, an American television host from the Fox Business Network, and Liu Xin, a Chinese host on China Global Television Network, squared off in a highly-anticipated debate about trade and technology on Wednesday night in the United States.

spar

spar作动词,此处表示“(友好地)争论,争辩”,英文解释为“to argue with someone but not in an unpleasant way”举个🌰:

He’s been sparring with the security guards.

He entered the ring to spar a few one-minute rounds with an old friend.

square off

表示“摆好架势(准备迎战)”,英文解释为“to prepare to fight, compete, or argue with someone”举个🌰:

The two giants in the fast-food industry are squaring off this month with the most aggressive advertising campaigns yet.

(Financial Times):US-China TV hosts battle it out on trade.

That's it? A much-anticipated debate about the trade war between a Chinese television host and an American peer left an avid audience in the Asian country underwhelmed and complaining that it was all over far too soon.
The livestream of the debate on the Fox Business Network between Trish Regan and Liu Xin, a journalist for state-run China Global Television Network, repeatedly slowed and pixelated as millions of Chinese logged in to watch.
The debate rose rapidly among hot topics on Weibo, the Chinese equivalent of Twitter, garnering 130m followers on Thursday morning.

battle it out

表示“决一胜负”,英文解释为“to keep fighting or opposing each other until one person or team wins”举个🌰:

Sixteen teams will battle it out.

avid

此处avid /ˈævɪd/ 用来形容观众,表示“ery enthusiastic about sth (often a hobby)  渴望的;渴求的;热衷的;酷爱的”,英文解释为“wanting to get sth very much;very enthusiastic about sth (often a hobby)”,如:an avid reader/collector 酷爱阅读/收藏的人,举个🌰:

He was avid for more information.

underwhelmed

underwhelmed /ˌʌndəˈwelmd/与上面的avid形成了鲜明的对比,表示“无动于衷的;毫不激动的”,英文解释为“not impressed with or excited about sth at all”举个🌰:

We were distinctly underwhelmed by his speech.

此外还有overwhelmed,表示“(强烈地影响而使)不知所措的”,英文解释为“If you are overwhelmed by a feeling or event, it affects you very strongly, and you do not know how to deal with it.”

Sightseers may be a little overwhelmed by the crowds and noise.

pixelated

表示“图像模糊的;像素化的”,英文解释为“consisting of pixels, especially large pixels that produce an unclear image”,如:pixelated photographs 图像模糊的照片。

(Bloomberg):Chinese, U.S. TV Hosts Go Head-to-Head on Trade After Twitter Spat.

Her appearance, which took the form of an interview, came as Chinese state media increases its anti-U.S. rhetoric, running commentaries urging unified resistance to foreign pressure. The two engaged in a conversation about major issues in the ongoing trade war between their two governments.

In response to a question from Regan, Liu said tariffs should be lifted altogether.

“I think that would be a wonderful idea, don't you think? For American consumers products from China would be even cheaper, and for consumers in China products from America would so much cheaper too.”

rhetoric

rhetoric /ˈretərɪk/表示“辞令;巧辩;(尤指)花言巧语,浮夸之词”,英文解释为“language that is used to persuade or influence people, especially language that sounds impressive but is not actually sincere or useful”举个🌰:

The speech was dismissed by some people as merely political rhetoric.

run

熟词僻义,表示“发表,刊登;播出”,英文解释为“to show something in a newspaper or magazine, on television, etc.”

All the newspapers ran (= printed) stories about the new peace talks.

commentary

表示“(广播或电视所播事件的)评论,解说,实况报道”,英文解释为“a spoken description of an event on the radio or television that is broadcast as the event happens”举个🌰:

The commentary on the Olympic Games was much better on the other channel.

The Fox-CCTV trade war “debate” was polite, dull, and condescending.

The hype in the run-up to what was billed as a historic debate between a Fox anchor and a presenter from China's state broadcaster captured the imagination of millions.
But what actually transpired in the brief 17-minute encounter, punctuated by lags in the satellite connection, was disappointingly short on substance.

dull

Life in a small town could be deadly dull.

condescending

表示“表现出优越感的;居高临下的”,英文解释为“behaving as though you are more important and more intelligent than other people”举个🌰:

He has a condescending attitude towards women.

表示“(说话时)自命不凡的,高人一等的”,英文解释为“someone who is patronizing talks to you in a way that shows they think you are less intelligent or important than them”,如:a patronizing attitude 自命不凡的态度。

hype

表示“大肆的宣传广告;炒作”,英文解释为“Hype is the use of a lot of publicity and advertising to make people interested in something such as a product.”

We are certainly seeing a lot of hype by some companies.

the run-up to sth

表示“(重要事件的)前夕”,英文解释为“the period of time just before an important event”,如:in the run-up to the election 在选举的前夕。

bill sth as sth

bill熟词僻义,bill sth as sth表示“把…宣传为…”,英文解释为“to advertise or describe something in a particular way”举个🌰:

The castle bills itself as the oldest in England.

补充:be billed to do sth

表示“被宣传将会做某事”,英文解释为“if someone is billed to appear, perform etc somewhere, it has been planned and advertised that they will do this”

He was billed to speak at two conferences.

transpire

Exactly what transpired remains unknown.

补充:it transpires that ...

表示“现已清楚,现已泄露,被人所知”,英文解释为“if it transpires that something is true, you discover that it is true”,举个🌰:

It now transpires that he kept all the money for himself.

punctuate

表示“(不时)被打断”,英文解释为“to be interrupted by something, especially when this is repeated”举个🌰:
