At least 13 people are dead after an apparent arson-murder at an animation studio in the city of Kyoto as Japan reels from another mass killing.

reel from

表示“感到震惊;心烦意乱”,英文解释为“If you are reeling from a shock, you are feeling extremely surprised or upset because of it.”

According to local police, fire authorities and media, a man entered the well-known studio Kyoto Animation at about 10.30am in the morning local time and spread gasoline or a similar liquid before igniting a conflagration that engulfed the building.

conflagration

A conflagration is a fire that burns over a large area and destroys property.”

engulf

1) 表示“吞没”,英文解释为“If one thing engulfs another, it completely covers or hides it, often in a sudden and unexpected way.”

A seven-year-old boy was found dead after a landslide engulfed an apartment block.

The incident follows a stabbing rampage by an unemployed man in Kawasaki in late May in which 18 people were injured and two died, including an 11-year-old girl.

rampage

该词既可以作名词,也可以作动词,都表示“横冲直撞”,英文解释为“When people or animals rampage through a place, they rush around there in a wild or violent way, causing damage or destruction.”不过作名词时一般会以“go on a rampage”的形式出现,举个🌰:

Hundreds of youths rampaged through the town, smashing shop windows and overturning cars.

The prisoners went on a rampage destroying everything in their way.

That incident, which followed a mass stabbing  in 2016 by a former employee at a care home for the disabled, has raised fears in Japanese society about unpredictable acts of violence by disaffected or mentally ill individuals.

A 41-year-old man was arrested at the scene and taken to hospital for treatment. Unconfirmed media reports said he shouted “Die!” while spreading the liquid and that a number of knives were found at the scene.
