What do you get the man who has everything—a country to run, a billionaire friend with an island to vacation on, and the cover of numerous international magazines? Socks, it turns out.

vacation

表示“度假,休假”,英文解释为“to go somewhere for a holiday”举个🌰:

The Bernsteins are vacationing in Europe.

Prime Minister Justin Trudeau’s penchant for patterned and quirky footwear has made him an easy name to cross of the holiday gift lists of world leaders. Irish Taoiseach Leo Varadkar welcomed him to Dublin in July with a pair of green foot-protectors, and he got a set adorned with the faces of Kelly Ripa and Ryan Seacrest when he appeared on their show the month before.

penchant

表示“特别的喜好”,英文解释为“If someone has a penchant for something, they have a special liking for it or a tendency to do it.”如:a stylish woman with a penchant for dark glasses.

quirky

1)可作形容词,表示“(外貌、性格或行为)古怪的;难料的”,英文解释为“Something or someone that is quirky is odd or unpredictable in their appearance, character, or behaviour. ”举个🌰:

We've developed a reputation for being quirky and original.

You will probably notice an element of quirkiness in his behaviour.

Trudeau’s socks have been the object of both emulation and scorn since he took office. Opposition MPs have referenced them 10 times in the House of Commons, with Conservative Tom Kmiec satirically suggesting the appointment of a “minister for sock selection” in a debate over cabinet salaries and composition. Trudeau’s willingness to subvert the drab, grey stereotype of male political fashion has inspired other leaders to follow suit (those remain drab and grey for the most part, unfortunately). Varadkar wore Mounties and maple leafs to that July meeting, while British Columbia premier John Horgan recently pulled on some planets and stars for his sit down with the prime minister.

emulate

表示“效仿”,英文解释为“If you emulate something or someone, you imitate them because you admire them a great deal.”

Sons are traditionally expected to emulate their fathers.

MPs

Member of Parliament

the parliament of the United Kingdom, consisting of the House of Commons and the House of Lords

drab

1)表示“(色彩)暗淡的,暗沉的”,英文解释为“not bright in colour, especially in a way that stops you from feeling cheerful”举个🌰:

The walls were painted a drab green.

people forced to live grey, drab existences in ugly towns

3)in dribs and drabs表示“少量地,零星地”,英文解释为“in small irregular amounts or numbers over a period of time”举个🌰:

The guests arrived in dribs and drabs.

follow suit

表示“跟着做;仿效”,英文解释为“If people follow suit, they do the same thing that someone else has just done.”

Efforts to persuade the remainder to follow suit have continued.

Mounties and maple leafs

Mounties: a member of the Royal Canadian Mounted Police

Socks have become a stand-in for personality in the modern male professional’s dress code. Gone are the greys and whites that filled your father’s brogues and oxfords, to be replaced with a range of patterns and colours out of a designer’s wildest trip. The Prime Minister is simply a dresser of his age.

stand-in

表示“临时替代者”,英文解释为“A stand-in is a person who takes someone else's place or does someone else's job for a while, for example because the other person is sick or away.”

He was a stand-in for my regular doctor.

brogues and oxfords

out of

表示“出于”,英文解释为“You use out of to say what feeling or reason causes someone to do something. For example, if you do something out of pity, you do it because you pity someone.”

He took up office out of a sense of duty.

Trudeau of course has a very serious job, so on some days when his footwear are whimsical, his words are weighty. (On truly solemn occasions, he does leave the silly socks at home). Try to match the prime minister’s quotes from key meetings and appearances this year with the socks he was wearing at the time.

whimsical

表示“异想天开的;滑稽可笑的”,英文解释为“A whimsical person or idea is unusual, playful, and unpredictable, rather than serious and practical.”

McGrath remembers his offbeat sense of humour, his whimsical side

weighty

表示“严重的; 重要的;严肃的”,英文解释为“If you describe something such as an issue or a decision as weighty, you mean that it is serious or important.”

Surely such weighty matters merit a higher level of debate?
