These webinars are designed for leading industry experts and companies from both countries to discuss common technical and operational challenges, and identify areas for future collaboration. Our second session on 28th July focused on Floating Wind and Deepwater Operations. We have included a review of this session within this post.

Our third webinar will take a closer look at the role of offshore wind in energy transition and green hydrogen. British and Chinese oil and gas companies are already working together closely on the industry’s decarbonisation, including a new energy transition zone in Aberdeen to foster skills development and R&D, and repurposing Scottish gas terminals to produce hydrogen at scale for electricity, heat and transport. There remains significant scope for further collaboration, including the shift towards green hydrogen, which will rely heavily on excess renewable energy produced by offshore wind. We are delighted to invite Alan Mortimer, Director of Innovation at Wood, one of the world’s top international contractors, to speak about his company’s role in energy transition, including the work on powering offshore oil and gas platforms with offshore wind. Dr Yuxuan Zhang, Director of Henan Lanxing Power Equipment that recently invested in the Edinburgh-based hydrogen services company, Logan Energy, will then share his vision for green hydrogen and prospects for closer UK-China cooperation in this area.

Alan Mortimer graduated from Glasgow University in 1987 with an Honours degree in Aeronautical Engineering. After four years at James Howden & Co. Ltd. in Glasgow, Alan joined ScottishPower, working in renewables development. His roles included Head of Wind Development where he developed the strategy for and helped establish a major wind portfolio including Whitelee Windfarm. In his subsequent role as Head of Policy for ScottishPower Renewables, Alan was responsible for managing policy and strategic issues whilst maintaining responsibility for identifying new business opportunities in renewables. 

Alan joined Wood Clean Energy in 2013 as Director of Innovation where his role currently involves extending the company’s renewable energy activities in onshore wind, offshore wind, solar, wave, tidal, hydrogen, heat and transport. His responsibilities include managing Wood’s activities on offshore wind technology challenges, whilst developing and deploying the resources of the Wood organisation on key decarbonisation challenges for all forms of energy.

Yuxuan has a background in mechanical engineering and has been working on expanding business between UK and China-based companies in the fields of R&D, technology transfer and company consultancy. Our second of six webinars on UK-China Offshore Wind Collaboration, organised jointly with the China-Britain Business Council, took place on 28th July, this time focusing on floating wind, a topic that generated significant interest from our Chinese audience in the first session. We were delighted to be joined by Tim Sawyer from Flotation Energy, who gave a great account of his company's Kincardine offshore wind farm, and Mike Wilson from Ecosse IP, who introduced their new tension leg system called FLOWT.

Tim Sawyer, who is based in Western Australia and leads Flotation Energy's Asia business, explained the parameters for why floating wind will likely become an increasingly important driver of the global offshore wind industry. These include better wind resource, higher yields and availability, the ability to venture into deeper waters, simpler commissioning and decommissioning.

Among the topics discussed, audiences are particularly concerned about the cost of floating wind: on cost comparisons to fixed offshore wind, especially in the context of China's phasing out of subsidies in the next 18 months. Both Tim and Mike gave examples of how a combination of economy of scale and innovative engineering can help to rapidly drive down the costs of floating wind. Floating wind is an emerging industry, there is only 74 megawatts currently in store, which is very little. The cost of floating wind is two to three times the cost of fixed wind, so it really has not got economies of scale. The cost of floating wind can come down very quickly; we have a lot of projects that are up to 50 megawatts including the Kincardine project. I think we need to move towards 200 - 300 megawatts, that sort of scale to try and bring in some economies, and also of course to address some of the remaining issues, or rather challenges in the fabrication assembly of large structures in ports, including integrated designs that come out of that heavy lifting we're required. In addition, the potential development supply chain will provide a big head start, especially in countries that already have fixed offshore wind. So the future of floating wind is very bright, and its costs will come down quickly when it has a certain scale.

FLOWT, can be assembled at port and towed from shore, installed without expensive crane vessels, enables cheaper and more reliable power take-off cables, and is suitable for all water depths and types of seabeds, all at 50% of the cost of monopiles.
