In order to promote closer collaboration and commercial links between the UK and China, the UK-China Infrastructure Alliance was launched during President XI’s state visit to the UK in 2015. The UK-China Infrastructure Academy, one of the Alliance's initiatives, has for the past five years supported hundreds of Chinese investors in relation to energy and infrastructure investment in the UK.

With the aim to deliver more information about infrastructure development in the UK, we are delighted to invite you to our webinar series and showcase collaborative opportunities for both countries. As part of the Infrastructure Academy events in 2020, this webinar series will provide chances to exchange insights on global and UK energy investment. Our first session on 29th September 2020 featured energy produced from waste; a review of this session is included below.

Our next webinar on 29th October will look at the solar and battery storage technologies in the UK reveal the current market dynamics in investing in solar assets and battery storage projects, and discuss interactions between technologies and investment opportunities. Following significant integrations between the two industries, the adoption of new technologies and innovations in the UK have generated substantial investment opportunities. These have attracted attention from both corporate investors across the supply chain and capital investors in the finance sector.

Our first speaker, Logan Kube, Director of Deloitte, will present investment opportunities and recent market transactions in the solar and battery storage sectors, as well as compare regulatory frameworks between the UK and China.

Our second speaker, Shane Swords, Managing Partner of NextEnergy Capital, will focus on investing in subsidy-free solar assets in the UK. Being one of the largest solar specialist asset managers in the world, Shane will share NextEnergy’s insights on successfully investing in solar in the UK and Europe.

Our last speaker, Mark Christensen, Director from Reliagen, will discuss strategic investment opportunities in battery storage as well as its crucial role in supporting renewable energy generation.

Shane has over 20 years of experience in fundraising, M&A and debt, with specialities including sell side/buy side equity advisory, equity capital raising and arranging/structuring debt transactions in renewable energy and infrastructure projects globally. Most recently, Shane was Head of Institutional Fundraising at Downing LLP, where he structured and raised its first institutional fund, the Downing £125 million Flexible Generation Fund. Prior to this, he created a £1 billion solar platform with a large institutional investor.

Shane was also one of the initial Directors at Rubicon Capital Advisors, where he led several capital raises, buy side M&A and sell side M&A, including a US$750 million capital raise for an energy platform from the Canadian pension fund, PSP Investments.

Mark has over 20 years’ experience in complex technical project development, specialising in biogas, biomass, refined fuel production and advanced mechanical recycling, with large scale solar and battery energy storage in more recent years.  He has led consortia bids for high value (£100m-£300m) long-term municipal waste contracts, technology company fund raising and business case development for restructuring sustainable assets, plus worked for German, Austrian, Irish, Indian, Norwegian and British engineering companies.  He has been an Expert Witness on Energy-from-Waste schemes and more recently on commercialisation opportunities for bio-chemicals production from biorefinery scale up.

On 29th September, Department for International Trade and the China-Britain Business Council hosted the first of the five webinars on UK-China Infrastructure Academy 2020 webinar series.Waste-to-Energy (WtE) is an area of great interest for Chinese investors and contractors looking to get involved in the UK infrastructure market. The UK currently generates significantly more waste each year than its existing waste-to-energy facilities can handle, and despite an increase in the amount of waste being recycled and reused, overall waste volumes are expected to continue to grow due to continued consumption and population growth.

DIT’s Waste and Resources Specialist - Deborah Sacksgavean overview of the UK's WtE economic model and policy analysis. Deborahfirstly introduced the sources of energy generation in the UK and different renewable energy’s share, and then came up with the concept of circular economy and sustainable development. Most importantly and valuably, Deborah reviewed the policies in different levels of wastemanagementin the UK, and pointed out the ingredients for new investment.

Our second speaker Jayne Hennessy from Peel L&P Environmental Limited introduced Protos and the north west energy cluster, with the specific case study, she revealed the development and industrial chain of a mature energy innovation district. Peel L&P Environmental Limitedmanages and develops real estate and infrastructure in the environmental /energy technology, waste and minerals sectors, it is one of the UK’s leading companies specialising in large scale WtE projects. BothDeborah and Jayne stressed the trend and huge potential of developing WtE projects in the UK, encouraged by the Net Zero policy and market demand. The presentations were followed by a very busy Q&A session that revolved around five key questions:
