In Flanders Fields

By John McCrae

In Flanders fields the poppies blow

Between the crosses, row on row,

That mark our place; and in the sky

The larks, still bravely singing, fly

Scarce heard amid the guns below.

We are the Dead. Short days ago

We lived, felt dawn, saw sunset glow,

Loved and were loved, and now we lie

In Flanders fields.

Take up our quarrel with the foe:

To you from failing hands we throw

The torch; be yours to hold it high.

If ye break faith with us who die

We shall not sleep, though poppies grow

In Flanders fields.

In Flanders Fields is one of the most important poems during World War I. After witnessing the death of his comrade in arms, Lieutenant Alexis Helmer, who was only 22 years old, the author wrote this poem on May 3, 1915 in memory of the soldiers who died to defend the motherland. Poetry contains the author's thoughts of opposing war and yearning for peace. In December 1915, the poem was published on Punch. Because of this poem, the Flemish red poppy has become a sign for Remembrance Day.

John McCrae was born on November 30, 1872. A Canadian doctor and teacher who served in World War I, he is best known for his memorial poem In Flanders Fields. He died on January 28, 1918.
