Our expat community thrives on connection, and here at Jingkids, we’re all about our readers, what they need and want in order to maximize their time here in Beijing. Every Monday, we’re going to feature a prominent member of our expat community and get to know them a little bit better.

Hi, my name is Darren. I am Canadian-born, Australian-raised, and China-matured! After a pretty typical Australian youth (sports and beaches) and a teaching career that granted me experiences in all Australian mainland states with the exception of Canberra, my move to China was intended to reignite my lost love of teaching. That worked and 17 years on, I’m both still in education and still in China (obviously) and loving both.
What’s on your mind?
Which way is our world going – up or down? Are we as a world community becoming more enlightened, spiritually/morally elevated, or are we sinking into decline? There seems to be evidence for both arguments. Stories of human kindness, courage, and generosity juxtaposed against radical extremism and social media toxicity. Hard to tell which is winning.
What’s your motivation to get moving?
I feel like what I do matters. The value that athletics and interest activities have added to my own life (and continue to add) is immense. I am so grateful to be able to offer that to young people and help them discover and explore passions that will sustain them throughout their lives.
How do you stay sane in all the madness?
Exercise, sports, and my family and friends (both here & back in Oz) are reliable supports when the mania starts to overwhelm.
What’s your favorite thing about Beijing?
I spent the majority of my life in small communities – sometimes very small (think less than 1,000 people). Beijing has a buzz, vibe, call it what you will, that is so different from the calm I grew used to. For now, I am enjoying that. Also, there is always a surprise waiting around the next corner.
