随喜恶人，恶报更大
Reveling in an evil deed causes a worse reprisal than committing it
《诸法集要经》说：见别人造了非法的罪业，对此产生恶劣的随喜心，
The Sutra of Essential Doctrines says, “A person who perversely delights in another’s wickedness is severely deluded;
由于愚昧无知的缘故，自己所受的果报远远超过他。
he will experience a far worse karmic effect than the perpetrator.”
别人在做恶事时，千万不能去随喜。
When others are committing evil deeds, never rejoice in it.
以前美国发生“9·11”事件时，我听说中国个别年轻人欢呼雀跃，觉得实在是大快人心。
At the wake of the 9/11 attacks in the United States, I heard that some young people in China cheered and felt justice was done.
这样的话，你随喜赞叹本·拉登杀了近三千人的罪业，自己的过失不比他少，甚至比他还严重。
Bin Laden took nearly three thousand lives. Rejoicing in his crime is just as grave a fault as is his deed, maybe even worse.
《诸法集要经》中说：“若见造非法，生劣心随喜，由彼无智故，受苦复过是。”
The Sutra of Essential Doctrines says, “A fool taking a perverse pleasure in others’ evils will suffer even more.”
见别人造了非法的罪业，对此产生恶劣的随喜心，
That is, a person who feels a perverted delight when seeing others committing non-virtuous acts is severely deluded.
由于愚昧无知的缘故，自己所受的果报远远超过他。
He will experience a far worse karmic effect than the offender.
《法句譬喻经》有一则公案，就说明了这个道理：
A story told in Analogical Scriptures of Codes illustrates this point well:
从前，佛陀在舍卫城时，有个信奉外道的长者，财富多得难以计数。
Once, during Buddha’s stay in the ancient city Sravasti, there lived an extremely rich non-Buddhist elder.
他儿子在20岁时娶妻，婚后夫妻二人相敬如宾，恩爱非常。
His son got married at the age of twenty, and the newlyweds were very affectionate and considerate to each other.
一天，妻子想去后花园赏景，他们便相偕前往。
One day the bride wanted to enjoy their beautiful garden, so they went out together.
见一棵大树上的花很美，妻子非常喜欢，流连忘返。
A big tree festooned with gorgeous flowers enthralled the bride so much that she was reluctant to leave.
为讨爱妻欢心，丈夫就爬到树上，
To please his loving bride, the young man climbed up the tree to pick flowers.
结果不小心从树上摔下来，当场重伤而亡。
Unfortunately, he fell from the tree and died on the spot from severe injuries.
这时，离他们新婚还未满七日。
At that time, they had been married barely seven days.
听到这一噩耗，全家人痛不欲生。
The whole family were plunged into immense grief at this devastating news.
到了出殡的日子，长者见自己白发人送黑发者，内心尤为悲苦。
On the day of the funeral, the elder’s heart was pierced with anguish that his young son should die ahead of him.
这时，佛陀知道他们得度的因缘已成熟，就出现在他们面前。
The Buddha saw that it was time to teach them the Dharma, and he appeared at the funeral.
长者全家见佛陀亲临，感动不已，立即恭敬顶礼佛陀，对佛陀诉说心中的哀痛。
Moved by the Buddha’s personal visit, the elder’s whole family prostrated respectfully to the Buddha and lamented to him about their misfortune.
佛陀讲述了万法无常、轮回皆苦的道理，然后劝他们不要特别伤心。
The Buddha gave teachings on impermanence and the suffering nature of samsaric existence, and then he consoled the heartbroken family.
长者听闻妙法，忧伤放下大半。
Upon hearing the exquisite Dharma, the elder felt his sorrow become more bearable.
他问佛陀：“我儿子过去造了什么恶业，以至于年纪轻轻就丧命了？”
He asked the Buddha, “What evil act did my son commit previously that he had to die so young in this life?”
佛陀告诉他：“过去，有一个少年手持弓箭，和三个朋友到树林游玩。
The Buddha told him, “Once upon a time, a young man carrying a bow and arrow went with three friends to explore the forest.
少年看见树上停着麻雀，便想将它射下。
When he saw a sparrow perched on a tree branch, the young man wanted to shoot it.
在旁的三个朋友不但不劝阻，反而一直鼓励：‘如果你能一箭射中，那实在是了不起！’
His three friends, instead of stopping him, cheered and urged him on, ‘Yes! If you can knock it down with just one arrow, that will be quite marvelous!’
少年听了，举弓射去，
Encouraged, the young man aimed at his target with the arrow and shot it.
麻雀当下中箭堕地而亡，一旁的三人兴奋得拍手大笑。
The sparrow was hit and immediately fell to its death. His three friends roared excitedly and clapped their hands.
但此后，四人经历了无数劫的生死流转，共同为他们杀鸟的罪业而受报。
However, since this excursion, these four friends have collectively experienced the retributions of killing that bird throughout numerous cycles of rebirth.”
其中，那三个见杀随喜的人，一位因过去修福，现在天上享福；一位投生至海中，成为龙王；另一位就是你。
“Among the three that rejoiced in the killing, one is now living in heaven thanks to his past merit; the second one became a naga king* in the ocean, and the last one is none other than you.”
这名射箭的少年，先投生至天上，是天人的儿子；
“The young man who shot the arrow was first reborn in heaven as the son of that heavenly being.
命终后投胎到人道，成为你的儿子；
When he died he took rebirth in the human realm as your son.
如今从树上摔死，立即化生为龙王的儿子，但刚出生就被大鹏吃掉了。
When he died from falling out of the tree, he was immediately reborn as the son of the naga king, but was devoured by the garuda† right after birth.
所以，此时此刻，天上、人间、海中有三位父亲都在为儿子的死而痛苦不已。
So, at this very moment, three fathers—one in heaven, one on the earth, and the last one in the ocean, respectively—are all mourning terribly over the death of their own sons.”
用箭射杀麻雀的少年——你现在的儿子，因为造下杀业，所以他世世短命。
“Your present son, the young man who shot the sparrow, has been destined to die prematurely for many lives because of his killing karma.
而在一旁随喜他杀业的三人，则同尝失去儿子的苦果。
And the three others who rejoiced in his killing all have to suffer the same misery of losing a son.
可见，因果丝毫不爽，不可不慎！”
This goes to show that the law of causality is absolutely infallible. Shouldn’t everyone exercise extra caution?”
见别人作恶，对他随喜的话，
When an act of killing is committed and rejoiced over,
作恶者需用生命来偿还，随喜者将来也难逃苦果。
the killer has to pay back with life, and those who cheer the killing will encounter inescapable suffering.
* Nagas are mythical serpentine water spirit or dragon-like beings. They are generally regarded as guardians of treasure.
† The garuda is a mythical bird-like creature known as the eternal sworn enemy of the naga serpent race. Garuda is also an important deity of protection in Buddhism.
