Abstract
The precise measurement of the muon's anomalous magnetic moment (Muon g-2) is one of the most accurate particle physics experiments. It rigorously tests the Standard Model of particle physics with a precision of one part in ten million. The Muon g-2 Experiment at Fermilab, with results published in 2021 and 2023, showed discrepancies from earlier Standard Model predictions, exceeding five standard deviations. Does this indicate the advent of new physics? How close is the muon anomalous magnetic moment to winning a Nobel Prize? The final experimental results are expected in 2025, and there are good reasons to believe that the over two-decade mystery of the muon anomalous magnetic moment is nearing a final countdown.#
The Speaker
Prof. Liang LI, Professor of Physics at the School of Physics and Astronomy, Shanghai Jiao Tong University. Professor LI specializes in particle physics experiments, advancing in “Big Science” projects and interdisciplinary frontiers. He leads the SJTU Muon Team, representing China in the Muon g-2 collaboration, serving as the secretary-general and co-coordinator for offline data analysis and simulations. He was a key contributor to the major Muon g-2 discoveries in 2021 and 2023. His significant contributions also include discoveries on single top quark production, Higgs and top quark associated production, and four-top quark production. His research was recognized as part of the Top 10 Highlights by the American Physical Society in 2018, Top 10 Scientific Advances by Science in 2021, and spotlight achievements at the 2023 Electroweak Interaction and Unified Theories Conference. He has received awards like the Most Influential Paper Award from the Chinese Physical Society, Young Scientist Award from the World Top Scientist Forum, and titles like "Kaiyuan Top 10" Teacher and Outstanding Doctoral Dissertation Advisor (Top 1%) at Shanghai Jiao Tong University.
