[WORLD CLASSROOM] My Barcelona Experience 【

2017-05-26 Greg Eiselt YCISBeijing

At YCIS, we believe in a holistic means of education that nurtures the whole child in addition to purely academic learning. Every spring, we offer students at YCIS schools around the country unique opportunities to experience cultures and environments markedly different from their own.

This year, students from YCIS Beijing once again traveled to far-out locales all over the world, from Berlin to Washington DC to Barcelona. Our students in Barcelona, Spain, recently returned and had nothing but glowing praise for the trip, having experienced the rich cultural heritage, delicious food, and even local flamenco dancing that the country has to offer.

We caught up with one of our students, Year 8 student Alicia Seng, for her recommendations on three of the can’t-miss locations and activities to check out on your next trip to this beautiful city!

Pont del Diable (The Devil’s Bridge)

This famous aqueduct is actually in the nearby city of Tarragona. You can walk across the top of it and below it. It was originally Roman, but reconstructed in 1238 on the top of the original foundations. It’s built out of cut limestone blocks, amazingly with no cement. The architects just fit each block together really tightly. It’s really impressive that it’s stayed together all this time! It’s a really impressive piece of ancient history that anyone visiting the area should check out.

The Sagrada Familia

This famous Roman Catholic Church is another great place to visit for lovers of history, culture, and architecture. Probably the most impressive and unique part of this building is its tall towers, which we had the opportunity to climb up. If you look down the stairs from above, you can see the stairs spiral in the shape of a shell. It can be a bit nerve-wracking if heights make you nervous! Still, it’s a beautiful building that anyone would enjoy visiting.

Paella Cooking Classes

Last but not least, take some cooking classes! On our trip, we took a class from a real Spanish chef on making the traditional dish paella. It’s generally a huge pot of seafood with mussels, prawns, and clams over rice with other ingredients too. We all had different roles; my job was to clean and prepare all the seafood. The end result was really delicious. I highly recommend trying your hand at it if you get the opportunity to come to Spain!
