1. To refer to the present or the future after if when you are talking about something unlikely or untrue, use the past tense.

If someone gave me the money, I would buy a car tomorrow. 

如果有人给我钱就好了，我明天一定会去买辆车。

If I had enough money, I would buy a villa. 

如果我有足够的钱的话，我会买套别墅。

2. In formal English or in writing, use were not was whenthe subject of the clause is I, he, she, it, there or a singular noun. 

If I were in that position, I would get legal advice. 

如果我处于那个位置的话，我就会寻求法律意见。

I wouldn't worry about it if I were you. 

我要是你的话，就不会为此担心。

Imagine how you would feel if your child were killed. 

如果是你的孩子遇害了，你想想会是什么样的感觉！

3. In normal conversation, you can also use was. 

If I was ten years younger, I would go out with him. 

如果我年轻十岁的话，我就和他约会去。

4. The expression if I were you is fixed. Do not say "If I was you", even in normal conversation. 

If I were you, I would have a talk with your parents. 

如果我是你的话，我就会和父母谈谈了。

5. To refer to the past when you are talking about something that did not happen, use the past perfect tense. 

If he had married Laura, he would have been unhappy. 

如果他娶了Laura, 他会过得很不开心的。
