Definition: To help other people and do things for them as well as expecting them to do things for you.

互相忍让、互谅互让、互相谦让

Good relationship is all about give and take.

giver (n.)

Definition: One who gives; a donor or contributor.

(愿意)付出、奉献的人

taker (n.)

Definition: Someone who accepts support and help from other people, but who is not willing to give them support or help.

只接受而不回报的人

Maria is always the giver in the relationship.

在这段关系当中，Maria 一直都是在付出的人。

He is the taker in the relationship. He is a bloody selfish person.

在这段关系当中，他一直都在占便宜，实在是一个很自私，很自私的人。

I was talking to a Malysian colleague the other day. It’s always fun to speak with Malysian Chinese as they mix English and Chinese in the same sentence. She said and I quote, "The most important thing in a marriage is errrrrr.....互相忍让." So how do we  express 互相忍让 in English? You could say "compromise" or "mutual respect." But the most relevant expression for a marriage or romantic relationship is "Give and Take." 

You rarely hear people say, "the most important thing in a relationship is give and take." The normal way to say it is, "good relationship is all about give and take."

Further more, you could say, "Maria is always the giver in the relationship," which means Maria is more willing to 忍让 in the relationship. On the other hand, if you say he is the taker in the relationship, it means he is a bloody selfish s…o…a b…. As for Ken, he of course is the giver in a relationship. He gives time, he gives real 感情, he gives effort. But there is one thing he doesn't give…. He doesn't give any money.
