keep up with the Joneses

Definition: Try to have the same new, impressive possessions that other people have;to maintain the same lifestyle as one's neighbors or peers.

A: Why did she buy such an expensive car?

B: Well, she lives in a wealthy part of town - I bet she just wants to keep up with the Joneses.

If you can't afford an iPhone, use Huawei, which is as good or better than Apple. Keeping up with the Joneses is stupid, you know?

I am tired of trying to keep up with the Joneses. Let's just move if we can't afford to live here.

First the Smiths got a swimming pool, and now their neighbours, the Andersons, are building one. It's silly, the way people always have to keep up with the Joneses.
