李松松 Li Songsong丨“雕塑油画” Sculptural Painting

The most notable feature of Li Songsong's paintings is that layers of paint are stacked together, and countless broken color blocks together form the whole picture, which to some extent becomes a three-dimensional relief of oil painting. Although the color block is the basic component of the picture, it still contains strong brushstrokes and completes the depiction of details in an incredible way.


李松松的画,最显著的特点就是那一层一层的颜料堆叠在一起,无数破碎的色块共同构成了画面的整体,某种程度上成为了油画的立体浮雕。虽然色块作为画面的基础构件,但里面仍然包涵强劲的笔触,并以不可思议的方式完成了对细节的刻画。

 


Born in 1973 in Beijing, China, Li Songsong studied oil painting at the Central Academy of Fine Arts in 1992. As one of the most popular contemporary young painting artists in China, he has held exhibitions in many places around the world.


李松松1973年生于中国北京,1992年后进入中央美院学习油画专业。作为中国炙手可热的青年当代绘画艺术家,他已经在世界多地举办过展览。



He was quiet and his work is also relatively serious, often starting with old photographs of political subjects or major historical events. Almost all the paintings are taken from newspapers, the Internet or magazines, which have a strong sense of the times. This kind of historical theme and vague freehand painting style makes history feel like a movable feast.


他本人的话不多,作品也相对严肃,多以政治题材或重大历史事件的老照片作为绘画的起点。几乎所有的画,都是从报纸、互联网、杂志上摘取的画面,具有很强的时代感。这种有历史主题和朦胧写意的画风,令人觉得历史是一场“流动的盛宴”。

Li Songsong is often labeled as a "historical painter," but he doesn't think it matters. History is a little girl dressed up by others. Different viewpoints will give different interpretations to the same historical event. It seems that Li Songsong deliberately eliminated his political position in the painting, does not presuppose a moral position, and does not want to discuss the political impact of his work in public, leaving more room for interpretation by the audience.


经常有人给李松松贴上“历史画家”的标签,但他本人觉得这并不重要。历史是一个任人打扮的小姑娘,不同的立场对同一件历史事件会有不同的解读。李松松似乎是在画中刻意消除了自己的立场,并不预设道德立场,也不愿在公众面前讨论他作品所产生的政治影响,这给观众留下了更多的解读空间。

It was not from the beginning that Li Songsong painted in the way he does now. Initially, he chose to paint images from mass media excerpts with one or two colors. But as his research deepened, around 2002, Li Songsong began adding more colors and thicker coatings to his paintings.


并非从一开始,李松松就以现在的方式绘画。最初,他选择用单色绘制大众媒体上节选的图像。但随着研究的深入,在2002年前后,李松松开始在画中加入更多的颜色和更厚的涂层。

For each color block, he makes it individually. It was not until all the pieces were finished that they were finally pieced together. The process is very exciting and the result is often a surprise. Seemingly disparate parts eventually merge into a coherent whole, showing unusual uniformity.


每个色块,他都是单独制作,直到完成所有碎片,最后才把他们拼接在一起。这个过程非常令人激动,拼接的结果往往是一个惊喜。看似毫不关联的部分最终合成为一个连贯的整体,展现出不同寻常的一致性。
