Dominique Fung is a Canadian Chinese female artist born in Ottawa, Ontario, Canada, in 1987. She moved from Canada to New York City four years ago. Her identity as a Chinese woman and the experience of growing up in a western society together shape her unique painting style.

It can be said that Dominique Fung's paintings are a wonderful combination of surrealism, Orientalism, and classicism. In her paintings, traditional images of Chinese women often appear, as well as elements with Oriental characteristics such as porcelain, teapots, silks, fruits, vases, antiques, and koi fish. In her paintings, all objects have smooth surfaces and a layer of porcelain-like glaze, combined with a style similar to that of 19th-century European painting. This gives the picture a combination of classical beauty found in traditional Western painting and a strong sense of the exotic Oriental style.

These objects are often crooked, and the strange gravity and perspective merge to create a twisted, surreal space. This method of painting is reminiscent of Dali, everything seems to be a subconscious scene in a dream. Dominique Fung once mentioned that she was fascinated by Salvador Dali and Frida Kahlo from the age of ten. She has also recently been studying the surrealist and impressionist works of Honoré Sharrer, Dorothea Tanning, San Yu, and Leonora Carrington.

But what Dominique Fung really wants to discuss is the place and identity of Asian women in American culture. Dominique Fung is influenced by the American theorist Anne Anlin Cheng's idea of Ornamentalism, where she believes Asian women are too often seen as "decorative" in Western culture.

In Dominique Fung's painting, women and porcelain merge. An Asian woman with yellow skin is portrayed as an object; conversely, antiques, vases, fruit, porcelain can also be a person. For example, some vases wear cheongsams, and some porcelains have female sexual organs on them. In doing so, the artist hopes to re-examine the relative relationship between Asian women and goods, and the dire consequences of dehumanizing a race and gender.
