@Alan Warran

The Gympie Town Centre is the region’s Principal Centre and services approximately 50,000 residents, as well as visitors passing through on the Bruce Highway. Completed July 2017, the project demonstrated community aspirations for cost-effective streetscape improvements by introduction of new street furniture, pedestrian crossing points, significant street tree planting and landscaping, streetscape lighting, public art, and widened pedestrian pavement areas to encourage alfresco dining and encourage an 'eat street' atmosphere.

The Design intent for Smithfield Street, Gympie, is captured by the words ‘Golden Opportunity’, stemming directly from the Place Brand developed through the Gympie Town Centre Branding and Marketing Strategy (2014). The design outcome showcases stories and themes about the past, present and future of Gympie with the streetscape design theme based on the gold discovery history of the region.

ARTWORKS

High quality themed public artwork was identified to add significantly to the overall place experience of Smithfield Street. The public art was selected to create a unique visual and aesthetic presence to capture the sense and draw people into the street, as well as to maintain human interest over time. Various public artwork opportunities were identified for Smithfield Street and to assist in activating key nodes. The theming, form and materials of the artworks was explored in the detailed design phase as public artwork briefs were developed and public artists were selected and commissioned to develop concepts and deliver art pieces that became integrated into the streetscape.  Artwork throughout the streetscape consists of the ‘River of Gold’, which is incorporated into the railings and two themed sculptural pieces collectively titled ‘Alchemy’.

Alchemy, by artist: Russell Anderson, comprises the Hatch and Gold Making Machine (opposite side of the street), themed on a fictional reference to the town’s rich gold history. The Hatch capes an old mine shaft, where tiny gold making creatures were discovered producing minuscule amounts of gold. Operating the Gold Making Machine amplifies the effect of these creatures, transmitting energy back into the shaft and transforming bedrock in to a golden opportunity.

River of Gold, by artist MANNINGDALY, connects place and community, celebrating the rich landscape and unique history of the Gympie region and reflects the narrative of Gympie’s past, present and future. It references the Mary River, atomic structure of Gold and flowers of the endemic Hairy Hazelwood, Silky Oak and Gympie Nut.

LANDSCAPE MATERIAL, FINISHES AND FURNISHINGS

Paving materials underfoot reflect Gympie’s geology, settlement and growth. Gold pavers represent the Gold Rush and wealth it brought; slate-coloured banding references the geology of the area and signifies permanence and solidity; and earth colours refer to the richness of the soil of the Gympie region. Catenary lighting overhead is inspired by the outline of the Smithfield Reef and the perforated seating, bollards and support poles give the appearance of a gold fleck.

PLANTING PALETTE

Street tree and understorey plantings were selected based on robustness, vigour and growth habits as well as other visual and cultural characteristics that add to the vibrancy of the street.

The intent for the overall planting design was to create a green, inviting and leafy character in Smithfield Street and to maximise footpath shade by trees to create a pleasant pedestrian microclimate and human scale. All trees are native tree species and understorey plantings are a varied mix of hardy native and exotic species.

照明

LIGHTING

Decorative lighting and lighting effects were employed and colourful or patterned lighting effects on paving were utilised to enhance vibrancy and mood. The project included a Catenary Lighting solution to create a unique point of difference for the street and to enable the creation of lighting and night time effects suited to various functions and uses. Catenary lighting overhead is inspired by the outline of the Smithfield Reef and the perforated seating, bollards and support poles give the appearance of a gold fleck.

Other low-level lighting was developed to focus on footpath spaces and key nodes, public artworks and feature planting elements in the street.

Economically, the street now significantly contributes to an attractive vibrant town centre which has encouraged the take-up of vacant premises, boosted the number of eateries offering alfresco dining, and encouraged existing businesses to stay open longer, particularly on weekends, leading to more job opportunities.

Socially, the project has reinforced the town centre’s role as an attractive regional hub that contributes to safe, caring and connected communities. Innovative lighting systems enhance ambience and safety, shaded areas offer relief from the daytime sun, and there is better public safety and access to shopping and services, including compliant People with Disability parking layouts – with all improvements incorporated to encourage social interaction.

Environmentally, extensive landscaping featuring 17 trees and more than 1200 native shrubs and groundcovers, creates a pleasant pedestrian microclimate and to shade shops, cutting cooling costs; improved storm water drainage allows the upstream catchment to be developed to its ultimate potential; and talk about future thinking – the street has been designed with electrical switchboards, underground electrical conduits and internal casing on the catenary poles with 150% additional capacity to allow for future Smart City technologies.

On top of the above, the design also supports and builds on the existing wider town centre environment for promoting walking and cycling to ensure the region continues to promote the benefits of active transport and meeting broader health and sustainability goals.
