CFP: Special Issue on B5G Wireless Communication Networks

The fifth generation (5G) wireless communication networks are being standardized and will be deployed worldwide from 2020. However, 5G will not fully be able to meet all requirements of the future and have limited global coverage for space, air, ocean, etc. With respect to the 5G network, beyond 5G (B5G) wireless communication networks are expected to provide a ubiquitous always-on global network coverage and enhanced spectral/energy/cost efficiency, higher data rate, lower latency, larger connection density, better security and intelligence, etc. To meet these requirements, terrestrial wireless communication networks will have to be integrated with satellite networks and emerging unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) communication networks. Dramatically new network architecture and technologies are also needed, such as software defined network (SDN), network slicing, edge computing, cloud computing, quantum communication, etc., just to mention a few. Besides, B5G will exploit vast frequency bands to improve data rates, including sub-6 GHz, millimeter wave (mmWave), terahertz (THz), and visible light communication (VLC) bands. Furthermore, faced with the big datasets generated by the use of large frequency bands, extremely heterogeneous networks, diverse communication scenarios, and the blossoming new service requirements, B5G networks will be assisted by artificial intelligence (AI) or machine learning (ML) technologies to have better network management. The application of AI to B5G networks should be fully explored.
This special issue is devoted to cover the advances in network architectures, radio technologies, and evaluation technologies for B5G wireless communication networks. Papers are solicited in, but not limited to the following main topics:
Channel measurements and models for B5G wireless communication networks
Advanced B5G wireless communication network architectures, e.g., SDN and network slicing
Application of AI and ML to B5G wireless communications
Edge computing and cloud computing for B5G networks
Communications in higher frequency bands, such as THz and VLC
Satellite, UAV, and ocean communications for B5G networks
Smart antenna and antenna design for B5G wireless communications
Security communication technologies for B5G wireless communication networks
