Hello. My name is Michelle Hughes. I am an epidemiologist at CDC, and I work on flu. AndI want to talk to you today about what you need to know about flu season, fluvaccines and what to do if you get sick. Do you know if flu will be bad thisflu season?

There is no way to predict how severe this flu season will be. Thetiming of when flu activity increases, the severity of flu activity and thelength of flu season can vary. But we do know that every year, flu causes millionsof illnesses, hundreds of thousands of hospitalizations and tens of thousands ofdeaths. My son has asthma, a chronic condition that can be made worse by flu. SoI make it a special priority to get him vaccinated to keep him healthy.

What should I do if I have flu symptoms? It is first important to know the symptoms offlu. People who are sick with flu can have sudden onset fever, cough, and sorethroat. Other possible flu symptoms can be seen on the screen.  If you have flu symptoms, it is important to stayhome for at least a day after your fever is gone.

And, if you are in ahigh-risk group or are very sick and worried about your illness, contact yourhealth care provider. How can I tell if I have flu or a cold? It can be hard totell if you have the flu or a cold, because the symptoms are similar. Both arerespiratory illnesses that can affect your nose, throat and lungs, but they arecaused by different viruses.

In general, cold symptoms start gradually whereasflu symptoms start abruptly and are more severe. But, the only way to know forcertain is to contact your health care provider. The best way to protectyourself and your family from flu this season is to get vaccinated.

The flu is one of the respiratory viruses that causes disease every year in the fall and winter and early spring months. Flu  season or respiratory virus season usually starts sometime in October or November and it can stretch anytime through the early spring months and sometimes even as late as April and May.

The flu virus is easily transmitted person to person through coughing, sneezing and unwashed hands. Particularly when people are indoors in close proximity to each other, flu and other respiratory viruses are easily transmitted quite quickly through populations.

Some people think that all kinds of head colds are the flu, but the flu is actually a specific disease that is caused by a virus and causes symptoms of fever, headache, sore throat, body aches and some gastrointestinal symptoms. It can be quite severe and even fatal at times.

We do have an antiviral medicine that we can use to treat influenza. It can be given and it works best if you take it early in the course of your illness so shortly after you develop the first symptoms of influenza. We especially consider it in people at high risk of complications like young children or elderly. What's most important when you get flu is that you rest, drink lots of fluids and take medicines to help control your fever.

The influenza virus can infect anyone, but some of the most vulnerable populations are the very young, the very old and people who have underlying health conditions.

So the most important protection against influenza is the influenza vaccine. In addition to that though people need to be very smart in the winter. We need to use good respiratory etiquette so if you're sick you need to cover your mouth, cough into your sleeve. You need to wash your hands really well, recognize the people around you that have a fever or sneezing or coughing can be contagious and can get you sick so try to avoid people that are sick. And if you are in their presence, make sure they're covering their mouth using good respiratory etiquette and that they're washing their hands a lot.

The recommendation is that anyone over six months of age get the influenza vaccine every year. The vaccine works usually very well. There are some seasons where the vaccine has a mismatch, meaning what we put into the vaccine doesn't match that well against the strains of influenza that are in the community. It's a little hard to predict that before we get the vaccine.

We usually learn more about that after we get the vaccine. But the vaccine is still the best method that we have to protect people against influenza. Usually any vaccine will give some protection. There are always gonna be some people that get influenza despite getting the vaccine, but the vaccine does protect against severe influenza and death so we strongly encourage all people to get the influenza vaccine every year.

How to Protect Yourself this Flu Season Why should I get a flu vaccine? The best way to protect yourself from flu is with a flu vaccine. Vaccines reduce your risk of getting sick, going to the doctor, and missing days of work or school.

Vaccination also has been shown to reduce the risk of flu-related hospitalization and it saves children's lives. If you are vaccinated, and still get sick, having received a flu vaccine will likely make your symptoms less severe.

Also, getting vaccinated isn't just about keeping you healthy; it can also help to protect important people in your life who may be more vulnerable to becoming sick from flu, such as babies, older adults, and pregnant women. How effective will the flu vaccine be this year? Every year flu vaccines are updated to protect against the 3 or 4 viruses that research indicates will be most common. It's still too early to tell how well the vaccines will work this year.

Typically though, a flu vaccine can reduce your risk of getting sick by 40 to 60%. Additionally getting a flu vaccine can reduce your risk of getting severely ill, being hospitalized, and has even been shown to reduce the risk of flu-associated death in children. CDC researchers and partners are continually working together to develop new and better seasonal flu vaccines.

Is it too late for me to get vaccinated this year? It's not too late to get a flu vaccine so now is the time if you haven't yet been vaccinated. Flu vaccine may be available in a variety of places including your doctor's office, pharmacies, and even some work places. We recommend that people get vaccinated as long as flu viruses are circulating and that can be until May.

Remember though, it takes about 2 weeks after vaccination for your body to be protected against flu, so it is important to get vaccinated now if you haven't already. How else can I protect myself from flu besides getting vaccinated? In addition to flu vaccination, there are important steps you can take to protect yourself and prevent the spread of flu. First, avoid touching your eyes, nose and mouth, as these are areas where flu viruses can enter your body. Also, avoid close contact with people who are sick and wash your hands often with soap and water.

Additionally, if you get sick with flu symptoms, you can protect the people around you by staying home and when coughing or sneezing, covering your mouth and nose with a tissue. The best way to protect yourself and your family from flu this season is to get vaccinated.
