Org. Setting and Reporting

These three internships are located in the Chinese Translation Section, Languages Service, Division of Conference Management, United Nations Office at Geneva and are under the supervision of the Chief of the Section/Service or the internship supervisor, as appropriate. 

These internships are proposed for an initial period of two months and a maximum period of six months between November 2017 and April 2018. 

Internships are UNPAID and full-time.

Interns work five days per week  under the supervision of a staff member in the department or office to which they are assigned.


Responsibilities

Within delegated authority, the intern will be responsible for the following duties: 

• Translates, subject to revision, documents covering a broad range of subjects dealt with by the United Nations, i.e., political, social, legal, economic, financial, administrative, scientific and technical.

Education

To qualify for an internship with the United Nations Internship Programme, the following conditions must be met: 

• Applicants must meet one of the following requirements: (a) Be enrolled in a graduate school programme (second university degree or equivalent, or higher); or (b) Be enrolled in the final academic year of a first university degree programme (minimum Bachelor’s level or equivalent); or (c) Have graduated with a university degree 8as defined above) and, if , much commence the internship within a one year period of graduation.

• Be computer literate in standard software applications; 

• Have a demonstrated keen interest in the work of the United Nations and have a personal commitment to the ideals of the Charter; and 

• Have a demonstrated ability to successfully interact with individuals of different cultural backgrounds and beliefs, which includes willingness to understand and be tolerant of differing opinions and views. 

                    

Work Experience

- Applicants are not required to have professional work experience for participation in the programme. 


Languages

Fluency in Chinese, which should be the candidate's main language, and knowledge of English are required. Knowledge of another United Nations official language is an asset.

You will help spearhead activities to engage other countries, tech giants, start-ups, universities, civil society, cities and regions with valuable insights in this field. You will also be part of a new kind of diplomatic representation with a global mandate and team.

TECH ASSISTANT Denmark’s Tech Ambassador | BEIJING

Your specific tasks will include:
- Provide academic, logistical, language and cultural support and expertise to the Tech and Digi-talisation Advisor.
- Project pipeline and execution of new ideas Help administer specific projects under the TechPlomacy initiative.
- Ensure smooth communication and planning within the global team.
- Facilitate good cooperation and information sharing between the Tech setup and other teams at the Embassy in Beijing in order to maximise synergies.
- Assist in reporting to authorities in Copenhagen in close collaboration with the rest of the tech team and the Embassy
- Preparation of high-level visits and delegation visits as well as planning of events and meetings. Some travel activity should be expected.
- Strategic communication and use of different media platforms to reach target audiences.

You will be part of the team of the Tech Ambassador in Silicon Valley while also feeding into and supporting the work of the Embassy in Beijing and the Danish Innovation Centre in Shanghai on technological and digital developments.

About you
- Fluency in English and Chinese (mandarin) a prerequisite.
- Relevant degree in international relations, social sciences, economy, technology, engineering or another relevant education.
- A solid understanding of and interest in Chinese politics and society as well as regional dynamics in Asia.
- Great intercultural skills, including excellent communication skills in English. A sound under-standing of strategic communication through different platforms to different target groups.
- A positive, open-minded and pro-active approach to new and varying tasks and the ability to work independently as well as in teams

Commercial:

 

1. To support the Embassy of the Republic of Namibia’s Economic Diplomacy in China by helping consolidating and strengthening bilateral and economic relations.

2. Reinforce and expand cooperation in the economic and commercial domains for the purpose of contributing to the achievement of national priorities reflected in the Harambee Prosperity Plan, National Development Plans and Vision 2030.

3. Market Namibia through promotion of trade partnerships and tourism hubs while attracting Chinese foreign investment to Namibia.

4. Prepares trade and tourism promotion activities; prepares and coordinates Namibia’s participation at trade and tourism fairs in the countries under the mandate of the Mission.

5. Follow up on implementation of commercial and economic agreements between Namibia and the countries under the mandate of the Mission.

6. Follow up on bilateral economic and commercial projects between Namibia and the countries under the mandate of the Mission.

7. Collect commercial and economic information of importance to Namibia;

8. Promote contacts between Namibian companies and tourism operators and those of the countries under the mandate of the Mission.

9. Keep track of trade and tourism fairs in the host countries which may be utilized to promote Namibia and advise on participation.

 

Administrative 

10. Facilitate with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of China regarding diplomats’ visas, diplomats id and any other legal residence paper work and data maintenance. Applying for Diplomatic Visas for other countries.

11. Facilitate contacts with Ministry of Foreign Affairs of China and keeps communications.

12. Process Diplomatic items declaration at the Custom.

13. Prepare and process quarterly VAT returns for the Mission and Diplomats.

14. Process airport pass applications and returns and booking VIP Room at Airport.

15. Act as an overall translator in area of responsibility and types all translations thereof.

16. Accompanies Deputy Head of Mission and other diplomats on diplomatic and social calls in China.

17. Draw up programme of official engagements for Deputy Head of Mission and other diplomats.

18. Acquaint yourself with consular matters including travel, tourist and business visas and assist at the Visa section when necessary.

19. Undertakes any other duties as may be directed by Supervisor and the Head of Mission.
