今天为你读诗的是联合国人口基金驻华代表洪腾，他的故乡在尼日利亚，作为联合国人口基金驻华代表，他说：女性在我人生中扮演着重要角色，一些对我职业生涯产生最重要影响的人都是女性。所以洪腾代表选择了一首他非常欣赏的尼日利亚的诗《母亲是金》。

《外交之声》：您为什么要选择为我们朗诵这首《母亲是金》呢？
洪腾代表：我选择读的这首诗是一首非常受欢迎的诗，这首诗的名字是Iya ni wura，中文意思是“母亲是金”是西非约鲁巴人的一首古老、传统的诗。约鲁巴是尼日利亚西南部最大的民族，尼日利亚是非洲人口最多的国家。整个约鲁巴民族大约有5千-6千万人口。在与尼日利亚相邻的贝宁共和国也有约鲁巴人。
The poem that I have chosen to read is a very popular poem .old poem, traditional poem among the Yoruba people in west Africa.The Yorubas are the largest ethnic group in the southwest of Nigeria.the largest country population-wise in Africa. There are about 50-60 million people.And you also find the Yorubas in today’s Benin Republic, which neighbors Nigeria.The poem is Iya ni wura, which translates to Mother is gold.洪腾代表：这是一首我非常欣赏的诗：因为就我个人来说，女性在我人生中扮演着重要角色,不论是作为一个人、一个工作者、一个专业人士，还是一个大家族的成员.这些女性不仅有我的母亲，还有我的一些最好的朋友,一些对我职业生涯产生最重要影响的人都是女性
So it is a poem I really appreciate.Because in my own personal life, women have played a significant role in the progress that I have made.as a person, as a worker, as a professional, as a member of the large society.Not just my mom, but some of my best friends,some of the most important influences in my career have been women.So I view motherhood broadly, as a process of nurturing,洪腾代表：从广义上来说，母性是一个润物细无声的过程，是一个滋润成长和温润身心的旅程。我想在中国社会也可以看到同样的情况，在社会的代际更迭中，母性的角色非常重要。没有母性角色，我们如何将中国的价值代代相传？这是不可能的。所以母性角色是由女性演绎的，推动整个社会朝着积极方向发展的角色。
of nurturing growth, of nurturing wellness, of nurturing wholesomeness. And I think you see the same thing in Chinese society that .there is a lot of importance attached to motherhood in terms of how a society transitions from generation to generation.How do you carry the values that define China from one generation to another without motherhood?This is not possible.So motherhood is really the role that women play for society to continue to evolve in a positive direction.荐书《最好的告别》：如何应对老年人越来越多，年轻人越来越少的社会《外交之声》：您的阅读习惯是怎样的？可以为中国朋友推荐几本您喜爱的书吗？
洪腾代表：我最近读过的一本书叫做Being Mortal（中文译为《最好的告别》），这本书提醒我们，所有人最终都会死去，不可能永远活着。这本书也谈到了社会应该如何更好地为所有人的最终死亡做好准备，它也适合中国的国情，这是一本非常有趣的书，我推荐给中国的读者。In terms of some recent books that I have read, I have read a book called Being Mortal, mortal and mortality.It reminds us that all of us eventually would die, and we cannot live forever.And it talks about how society should prepare better for the mortality of all of us. And it fits to China.It’s a very interesting book that I recommend to the Chinese viewers.洪腾代表：书名译为《最好的告别》，作者是阿图·葛文德，哈佛大学的一位印度裔美籍医学院外科教授。这本书告诉我们，作为一个社会，我们需要更好的为尚未到来的现实做准备，那就是社会将由越来越多的老年人构成，以及我们如何应对一个老年人越来越多，年轻人越来越少的社会。
It’s called Being Mortal, by an Indian American Professor Atul Gawande at Harvard University, a professor of medicine. It is really telling us that as a society, we need to prepare better for the reality that is not yet with us.That more and more, society would be made up of a large number of old people.And how do we deal with a society that has more and more old people and less and less young people.《外交之声》：请您给中国年轻人推荐一本书，给他们一些建议吧。
洪腾代表：我很喜欢一位牙买加裔加拿大作家马尔科姆·格拉德威尔。格拉德威尔写过很多很有趣的书，我相信很多中国读者读过。马尔科姆·格拉德威尔在写作时会遵循历史和证据。我经常向年轻人推荐Outliers一书（中文译为《异类》），这也适用于中国的年轻人。
I also like a Jamaican Canadian author called Malcolm Gladwell.Malcolm Gladwell has written some very interesting books that I am sure many Chinese readers have also read.What Malcolm Gladwell does is to look at history and evidence and to show on the patterns and trends.I always recommend Outliers to young people, and this also applies to young people in China. The things I would see from this book - I see where I give advice to young people as well.
洪腾代表：《异类》告诉我们，当我们看到一个非常成功的人，比如马云，比如一个成功的老师，比如一个非常成功的歌剧演唱家或运动员，他们做事情看起来毫不费力。或者想想一些最优秀的运动员，大家可能会觉得那家伙打乒乓球就像喝水一样毫不费力。
What that book (Outliers) says is that when you see a high-performing person.like Jack Ma, or a very successful teacher, or a very successful Opera singer, or a very successful athlete, and they do things effortlessly. So you see…think of some of your best sportsmen, you see oh that guy plays table tennis as if just like drinking water, so effortlessly. And what the book is showing, based on analysis and evidence, is that when people get to that stage, of near perfection, it is a result of years of hard work.
洪腾代表：而这本书基于证据和分析告诉我们，达到近乎完美的成就背后都是多年努力的结果。你所看到的只是结果，不是过程，不是达到结果的那段旅程。你看到了终点，却没有看到通向终点的旅程。所以作者要表达的是，一个人在自己努力的领域里做到最好，做到近趋完美，是努力、勤奋、不断练习和实践的结果。
What you have seen is the result, not the process, not the journey to that point.You see the destination, but you don’t see the journey to the destination. So the point he is making is that, perfection-being the best in your field, in your area of endeavor, comes from hard work, diligence, practice and application.洪腾代表：成功来自于努力和坚持不懈，最重要的是还要付诸实践，熟能生巧。当你看到完美时，不要认为它是一夜之间发生的，你得付诸努力，没有捷径可走。这就是我对当今中国年轻人的建议。 Success is the result of hard work, persistence.and most importantly, practice.
