The principal investigator is looking for a full-time Research Assistant [Appointment period: twelve months]to support the research project - “Content and form in the narratives of Mandarin-speaking children with developmental language disorder”.

The principal investigator

Prof. SHENG Li 盛欐

Li Sheng is Professor and a faculty member of the Speech Therapy Unit at the Department of Chinese and Bilingual Studies of the Hong Kong Polytechnic University. Prior to joining PolyU, she held faculty positions at the University of Texas Austin and the University of Delaware from 2007 to 2021. She directs the Language Learning and Bilingualism Lab and conducts basic, translational, and clinical practice research with the goals of advancing understanding of the mechanisms of language development and improving the quality of life of individuals who have language disorders. She studies how learner-internal factors, such as learning capacity and executive functions, environmental factors, such as the quantity and quality of language input, and linguistic factors, such as properties of the to-be-learned languages jointly shape learning outcomes. Through these investigations, she aims to develop psychometrically sound diagnostic tools to facilitate the early and accurate identification of monolingual and bilingual children with language disorders, and to contribute to the design of effective intervention programs.

Duties

The appointee will assist the project leader in the research project - “Content and form in the narratives of Mandarin-speaking children with developmental language disorder”. He/She will be required to: 

(a) conduct literature review, obtain ethics approval, recruit and test study participants, assist in data curation; 

(b) manage the undergraduate helpers who are assigned to the project; 

(c) engage in writing and publishing scientific papers related to the project; and 

(d) perform any other duties as assigned by the project leader or his/her delegates.

Qualifications

Applicants should have: 

(a) a master’s degree or an honours degree in Psychology, Linguistics, Cognitive Science, Early Childhood Education, Speech and Hearing Sciences or an equivalent qualification with several years of research / relevant work experience; 

(b) proficiency in Mandarin, English and Cantonese in listening, speaking, reading and writing; 

(c) strong communication and interpersonal skills, especially in working with families with young children; and 

(d) a documented track record in training and evidence of strong background or experience in language, child development, or related areas.
