Ideographic Compounds
When constructing Chinese characters, certain rules are followed in the combination of pronunciation, structure and meaning. Though the forms of modern characters differ vastly from those of the ancient ones, Chinese characters still maintain the characteristics of a logographic writing system. Therefore, understanding the process by which Chinese characters are formed will facilitate the learning of them.

Ideographic Compounds
These characters symbolically combine pictographs or ideographs to create a third characters.（13%of Chinese characters）
Examples:休、明、林、鸣、灾、焚、呆······
rén mù xiū
人 + 木 =休(a person rests against tree)
person tree to rest
人
木
休
Useful word:
xiūxi
休息:to have a rest
wǒ xiǎnɡ xiūxi yíxià
我想休息一下
I want to have a rest.
rì yuè míng
日+月=明(Sun and moon are the brightest)
Sun moon bright
Useful word:
mínɡbai
明白:understand
wǒ bù mínɡbɑi
我不明白
I don't understand.
mù mù lín
木 +木=林(a forest has more than one tree)
tree tree forest
mián huǒ zāi
宀 + 火= 灾(house on fire is a disaster)
house fire disaster
huǒ lín fén
火 +林= 焚(the fire burned under the trees)
fire forest burning
Useful word:
sēnlín森林 :forst
huǒzāi火灾:fire disaster
sēnlín fāshēnɡ le huǒzāi
森林发生了火灾
a fire broke out in the forest.
kǒu niǎo míng
口 + 鸟 = 鸣(birds cry with their beaks)
mouth bird (birds)to cry

Useful word:
mínɡjiào
鸣叫：sing(bird)
yì zhī niǎo zài mínɡjiào
一只鸟在鸣叫
a bird is sing.
kǒu mù dāi
口+木=呆(put mouth above the tree that is idiot)
mouth tree idiot

Useful word:
mùdènɡ kǒudāi
目瞪口呆:stupefifed
zhèɡe xiāoxi rànɡ tā mùdènɡ kǒudāi
这个消息让她瞪口呆
She was dumb at the news.
