4 steps to understand your target audience

Understanding your customers is important. It can give you a bigger picture of the market that you are about to enter and can help you to find a better solution for communication with your customers. It can also give you an understanding of your audience's specifications and can help you to create different creative solutions to promote your product or service.

Although some may perceive a product that has various target audiences as a hindrance, this is not the case. A product like this can appeal to different groups of people if you learn to understand the needs and problems of your audience.

Here are a few things you can do to facilitate this process:

1. Define a Marketing Persona | 定义营销角色

A marketing persona is an idealized version of the type of customers you would like to have. You can create a marketing person by answering these simple questions: 
  • What is the age of your perfect customer?
  • What is his/her educational level?
  • What is his/her social interest?
  • What is his/her job status?
  • What is his/her typical work experience?
  • What is he/she likely to get their information from? 
  • What three adjectives would the segment use to describe themselves?
  • What family situation he/she have? 
  • What relationship with your product this person has? 

By answering these questions, you can create a few examples of your perfect customer. This will help you envision how to best reach this customer and how they will be using your product or service. 

营销角色是您希望拥有的客户类型的理想版本。 您可以通过回答以下简单问题来创建营销人员:
  • 您的理想客户的年龄是多少?
  • 他/她的学历是多少?

2. Research to Understand | 研究了解

After defining a marketing persona, you need to research this person’s interests. You can do such research by searing on different social media platforms what the people who match this person cares and jokes about, and what their biases are. It is important to use different social media platforms to check the same people; doing this allows you to see how one person behaves differently across applications. This will help you understand trends and unique points for this specific target group.

3. Understand the Struggle | 了解存在的困难

How are these people using your product or services and what problem does it solve? Your perfect customer is a person who is using your product to satisfy their needs or to solve their problems. You can observe people and what struggles they have and by they use your product by: 这些人如何使用您的产品或服务,它将解决什么问
  • Interviewing people and asking questions
  • Observing, sometimes it is more important to see than to speak

4. Where is your audience? | 您的受众在哪里?

After you know who your audience is what they want and like, you can try to find these people. For this, you may need to use advertising management pages through social media (such as Instagram and Facebook). Another way is to read social media reports that share information on customers that use apps (such as WeChat and Douyin). Many tools are available that can help you select a specific audience group, show their presence on different social networks, and determine the cost for promoting your advertisements.  
 Understanding your audience better can help you create a content strategy that will be the most relevant and attractive to your specific target, which will lead to more sales and the business growth of your company.
