I’m Australian and I have a background in Psychology and Recruitment. The idea for BOSS LADY grew from a desire to create a fun and relaxed way for these kindred spirits to connect, share ideas and support each other, with the aim of helping people to improve their business and lives. I’ve been running the BOSS LADY community ever since and I continue to be inspired by its members. I now have two children and live in Los Angeles. I continue to run the BOSS LADY community from afar with the help of amazing volunteers in Shanghai. By building a community you’re adding value for your customers. It’s not just about the product or service your business sells. Through community you’re enabling people to connect with each other, to build their networks, to encourage discussion. It’s a great way for people to build relationships with each other and with your brand. It can also be valuable in terms of getting direct feedback from your customers to find out what they really want and are interested in. BOSS LADY is all about community. We host offline events where people can learn something relevant to their own business, and connect with other female entrepreneurs in the community. We also have our online community where people can interact, ask questions and share their challenges and successes. We aim to make our members visible to each other through initiatives such as our Spotlight interviews where we interview a female entrepreneur in the community and through our social media platforms where we often give shout outs to local business owners. Building a community can have many benefits but it is something that takes time and dedication. What kind of content should you use? Before starting a community you need to be clear about what your company represents. Why does it exist? What are your values? Who are the types of people you want to attract? Once you’ve answered these types of questions you can start to choose the right online platform to share your message. The type of content you use will depend on your product or service and your audience. However, if you want to build a community then sharing content that adds value to your customers rather than just selling to them is a good start. It’s also important to create engaging content that sparks conversation within your community.

This can be done by setting boundaries and moderating conversations. Put some time and effort into working out how you can add value to your community members. Start by thinking about what challenges your community might be facing and try to solve these challenges. Or offer your expertise and educate your community on a relevant topic.
