Once upon a time, there was a young man named Fred. Fred lived in a small city in the middle of nowhere. It was small and strange and famous, not for having the smartest people but for having the most violent. Fred had big ambitions but a small (or I would say no) budget. He had one specific genius idea, (don’t we all think our ideas are genius?). He wanted to open a book store (tell your friends that you want to open a books store and you will find out how Fred felt... unsupported).
One day, he finally decided to open the business of his dreams. Despite everyone telling him that “no one is reading now” (obviously)… “the business will fail in this city” (And in any other city, I believe your friends will tell you the same) he still decided to pursue his dream. Nobody, not even the bank supported his idea. Therefore, he had to come up with a more reliable reason for a bank loan- renovation of his apartment.
He got the money from the bank, but he had no budget for marketing. Then, Fred decided to start a blog (what could be cheaper than a blog?). He blogged about pursuing his dream, he honestly and straightforwardly wrote down everything about developing his business. He showed all of his expenses, explaining what he was doing step by step, all of the ups and downs in the process- bold honesty.
People were so curious to read about what he was doing. It was like watching a reality TV show (but very, very real!). Gradually, more and more readers flocked to read his blog, what could be more exciting than reading about somebody pursuing a possibly failing business idea? As more and more people began to read his blog, he began to attract attention from new investors, collaborators, and finally the date of the opening was announced.
Due to his blog, Fred had thousands of followers, all of his followers went to the opening of the book store, these people became his buyers, collaborators, investors. People loved reading about his development and becoming a part of it. This strategy worked for him, the business expanded and became one of the most popular places for readers with a chain around the country.
In the end, he sold his part of the business and shortly after opened a new one where he keeps his original ‘bold honesty’ strategy and shares publicly all of his financial information and company development information. This method allows him to attract new investors, new partners and allows his business chain to continue growing around the world.
Conclusion: Be like Fred. Share your process, be open and honest. Use social media as a starting point even if you have no marketing budget. Fred attracted followers who turned into customers, not by pretending he knew everything, but by sharing his journey and being brutally honest about it.
