讲座摘要

This lecture offers a hitherto uncharted chapter in the reception and mediation history of Samuel Rogers’s bestselling poem, The Pleasures of Memory (1792). Illustrated more frequently than other Romantic poets’ works, the printed visualisations of Rogers’s productions offer insights into how different period artists made sense of these works and how illustrations functioned as part of the reputation-building of individual works. The lecture will focus on a recently recovered set of vignettes that the painter, Thomas Stothard, who illustrated different editions of the poem, undertook for a non-edition publication, the diary-cum-almanac, The Royal Engagement Pocket Atlas (1808). This ephemeral annual introduced Rogers’s work to middle- and upper-class readers as part of the space that they otherwise used to record daily tasks and appointments. Focusing on the relationship between text excerpts and the vignettes that accompany them, the lecture will focus on issues such as the illustrated literary series, transtextuality, and intermediality, as well as visual reception studies.

主讲人简介

Sandro Jung is Distinguished Professor of English and Comparative Literature at the Shanghai University of Finance and Economics. He has been the Editor-in-Chief of the AH&CI-listed peer-reviewed journal, ANQ (Routledge/Taylor & Francis), for the past seven years, and his three most recent books are Kleine artige Kupfer: Buchillustration im 18. Jahrhundert (2018), James Thomson’s ‘The Seasons’, Print Culture, and Visual Interpretation, 1730–1842 (2015), and The Publishing and Marketing of Illustrated Literature in Scotland, 1765–1825 (2017). He has authored more than 200 publications, more than 100 of which were published in A&HCI-listed journals.
