Word

下面是一个帮助你掌握这个词拼写的方法:“I definitely want to get it right”通过这句话,你就可以记住这个词中间有一个“i”,而不是“a”。

03

正确拼写:government

我经常看到这个拼写错误。实际上必须有人来管理社会秩序才需要一个政府。它的后缀“-ment”代表具体的动作。正如entertainment(娱乐)是指使人entertaining(愉快的)方式一样,政府(government)也是治理(governing)的工具。

04

10 commonly misspelled words in English

 Hello, my friend!

I'm John Smagula. 」

Spelling words in English can be challenging. There are some rules, many of them arcane, and then there are variations and exceptions to these rules.  I think the best way to learn spelling is simply to practice and repeat. It may take up to seven times for you to get it right—and this may even be true for native English speakers!

Yet spelling is very important. If you receive a document with spelling errors, sometimes even just one typo, you may not trust the person who wrote it. This attention to detail is crucial to communicating professionally.  For example, if you see a typo in this article, either in my Chinese or English version, how would that affect your impression of my article?

Details determine success or failure.

Use spell check tools

There are many commercial spell checker apps available on the market. Since I use MS Word to create documents, I always use Word’s built-in Spelling and Grammar check tool before sending out a document. This really helps me to catch words I have misspelled.

Yet not all typing platforms have spell checkers. For example, if I type a message in English in WeChat, there is no indication whether I have spelled the word incorrectly.  If I want to send an important message using that kind of platform, I’ll first type my content into Word, check the spelling that way, and then copy and paste it into the online form.

Common errors

To help you through the English spelling morass, let me share with you 10 common misspellings I see somewhat frequently.

01

Correct spelling: publicly.

This is an example where the correct spelling actually sounds like the word. Whether you use this word publicly or privately, remember to omit the al before the ly.

02

Correct spelling: definitely

Here’s a way to help you with the spelling of this word, “I definitely want to get it right,” then you can remember that there's an in the middle there, not an a. This way, you’ll definitely get it right in the future!

03

Correct spelling: government

I see this error all the time. Someone must govern in order for there to be a government. The -ment suffix is the specific means of an action. Just as entertainment is the means of entertaining, so is government the instrument of governing.

04

Correct spelling: separate

This is a common term in business English, so it’s important to spell this word correctly. For example, you may instruct a colleague to send separate documents to different clients.

05

Correct spelling: occurred

Oh, the fun we can have with double consonants in English! Even though occur only has one r in the present tense, we add an r for the past tense. It occurs to me that this issue may have already occurred in your writing.

06

Correct spelling: until

English is a quickly evolving language, and back in the Middle Ages, “untill” was in fact the correct spelling of this word. But as English advanced, many letters were dropped, so we now just use “until.”

In song and poetry, as well as in spoken English, we often use this word’s abbreviation: ‘til. Adding to the confusion, “until” can also be abbreviated as til or till, but the most common is ‘til.

07

Correct spelling: receive

I remember back in elementary school, my teachers would ask us to repeat this spelling rule, which happens to rhyme: "i before e, except after c." In fact, it has become known as the I Before E Except After C Rule. I often hear myself repeating this to myself each time this kind of word comes up. Otherwise, in spelling the e generally comes before i.

The I Before E Except After C Rule has variations and exceptions, but it is usually my default rule. I believe you will not be deceived.

08

Correct spelling: which

This word has what we call the Silent H. It’s there in the written form, but is not pronounced. In other words, “which” and “witch” both have the same \ ˈwich\ sound!

Words with the same pronunciation but different spelling are known as homophones. The different spellings can help you distinguish words that sound the same.

09

Correct spelling: accommodate

So, just as we saw in “occurred” above, we can have even more fun with the double consonants. This word actually takes two c's and two m's.

This is also a common word in business communications. For example, “The company needed money, and the bank accommodated them with a loan.”

10

Correct spelling: gray

This is somewhat of a trick question, as technically, both spellings are correct. Gray is the more popular spelling in the United States, whereas grey is more common in the United Kingdom. According to the Merriam-Webster dictionarygray is correct, whereas grey is a less common spelling of gray.

So perhaps this rule falls into somewhat of a gray area.

Language learning is a life-long process, so please don’t let these spelling errors discourage you. Even though I write in English, teach in English, and even teach English, the Merriam-Webster dictionary is always by my side. When you write in Chinese, I’m sure you consult your trusty Xinhua dictionary as well. I have a few versions myself!

My friend, proper spelling is crucial to business communications. But with some study and practice, as well as use of spell checker software, you can improve.  And please remember that if you ever see a typo in my articles, please send me a message or leave me a comment so I keep learning and improving as well. We’re all in the same boat!
