“空间人文”系列讲座第七讲

7th of the Spatial Humanities lecture series

Dr. TSUI Lik Hang from Department of Chinese and History, City University of Hong Kong will be invited to deliver a guest lecture on the 6th class of the “Spatial Humanities and Digital Humanities” English course in the autumn semester of the academic year 2020-21 in School of Architecture, Tianjin University.

Digital technologies are beginning to thoroughly transform the study of Chinese culture in the 21st century. This transformation is, however, a convoluted story with twists and turns. Taking the study of premodern (or sometimes called “ancient”) Chinese history and its sources as the focus, this talk charts and analyzes the innovations in researching Chinese humanities driven by digital technologies. This development of so-called “digital history” intersects largely with how the digital humanities (DH) paradigm took root tortuously among historians of China. The talk will also offer an introduction and reflections on the efforts to construct a cyberinfrastructure for connecting digital resources and systems for Chinese history.

Course Introduction

The English course "spatial humanities and digital humanities" for international students in master and PhD programmes in School of Architecture of Tianjin University is a parallel course to her sister Chinese version in the spring semester starting from the academic year 2019-20. The twin courses are one of the first courses on similar topics provided around the world and the very first one provided in.

The course is focusing on the international academic trend of digital approaches in social and humanities studies for investigating interactions between space and people, which means place(s) in planning, architecture, landscape, geography and other social and humanity fields. Applications of digital technologies in history, archaeology, arts, literature, religion, and so on will be introduced. GIS, text mining, social network analysis, data visualization with case studies in different social and humanities fields will be mentioned.

"Spatial humanities and digital humanities"是天津大学建筑学院全英文研究生课程体系中提供给三个专业的硕、博士国际学生的选修课(也开放予其他体系研究生修读),与于2019-20学年春季学期首次开设的“空间人文与数字人文”硕士选修课(S2068057)作为孪生姊妹课程,是学术界最早开设的“空间人文”(spatial humanities)课程之一。
