At this workshop, we will introduce an alternative approach to understanding intercultural communication issues in the multicultural workplaces, namely, the small culture approach, in place of the large culture approach that has been dominant in the field. By comparing these two approaches with real life examples from the multicultural workplaces in China, we will discuss how the small culture approach can facilitate more effective communication, especially in the contexts of conflict resolution, disagreement expression and complicated problem solving. The workshop will be in the form of group discussions and role plays and therefore highly interactive. You are most welcome to join the workshop if you have a strong curiosity about enhancing intercultural communication in complicated workplace contexts.
Facilitator: Dr. Ping Du
Dr Ping Du is an Assistant Professor based in School of Education and English, UNNC, and a Senior Fellow of Higher Education Academy UK. She worked for seven years in Department of Foreign Languages and Literatures at Tsinghua University before going to Nottingham UK to study. Her expertise is in the description and explanation of intercultural workplace interactions drawing on pragmatics, sociolinguistics and cross-cultural psychology. Her research monograph, Intercultural Communication in the Chinese Workplace, was published by Palgrave Macmillan in 2015. She also conducts training workshops for executives and managers from different lines of business in China and Britain. The areas of training include intercultural conflict management, problem solving process and interactions, disagreement and persuasion strategies, Cultural Self Perception, and leadership discourse.

At this workshop, we will introduce the intercultural communicative competence model (Byram, 1997) and cultural sensemaking approach to raising staffs’ critical intercultural awareness in multicultural settings. By interpreting two real critical incidents which occurred in a multicultural workplace, we will discuss how the cultural sensemaking approach can raise critical cultural awareness and facilitate more effective communication, especially when we encounter uncertainty or even conflict. A set of learning materials will be shared before the workshop. The workshop will be highly interactive in the form of peer work and group discussion. You are most welcome to join the workshop if you are interested in improving intercultural competence in multicultural workplace.
Facilitator: Dr. Jenny Dong
Dr. Jenny Dong obtained an Ed.D (doctorate in education) degree at Durham University, UK, in 2014. The focus of her doctoral project was to explore the Chinese staff’s intercultural experiences with culturally diverse colleagues in a Sino-foreign joint university. Afterwards, she opened two courses at Zhejiang Wanli University on Intercultural Communication and Intercultural Ability Training for international students and for Chinese students , respectively. She is familiar with the educational systems and practices in higher education institutions in both China and UK, and has wide expertise in Student Affairs.
Introduction to RICH-Ed project
The RICH-Ed (Resources for Interculturality in Chinese Higher Education) project, funded by EU Erasmus+, aims to have an impact on national pedagogical and curriculum innovation by defining new pedagogical approaches, developing learning resources for intercultural learning, and creating a learning environment that empowers students and staff for global engagement in the Chinese higher educational context.
*The workshop will be video-recorded for EU evaluation of training quality (we follow strict anonmization practices of participants’ information including images).

通过这个工作坊,我们将会介绍一个新的“小文化” 概念,并与大家之前熟悉的 “大文化”概念做一个对比。“小文化” 概念有助于更好得理解多元文化工作场合的跨文化交流的现象和问题。结合中国多元文化工作场景中的真实案例,我们将会介绍一些能帮助我们理解和提高有效沟通的工具。这些概念和工具适用于理解和解决工作场合跨文化交流中的问题,尤其是相对复杂的场景,比如跨文化冲突以及不同意见的表达。
这个工作坊采用互动的教学模式,比如小组讨论和角色扮演。如果你对在复杂的工作场合如何提高交流能力感兴趣,这个工作坊会为你提供新的思路和策略。
讲师介绍
杜萍博士现任宁波诺丁汉大学英语系助理教授,英国高等教育学会资深研究员,曾任清华大学外语系讲师。英国诺丁汉大学英语系博士毕业。主要研究领域是跨文化职场交流。她应用跨学科的研究方法,包括社会语言学,话语分析,跨文化心理学等,对跨文化职场交流中各种语言现象,比如跨文化职场中的领导力,冲突解决,决策方式,讨论与辩论策略等,进行分析和解读。
2015年由麦克米伦出版了学术专著《中国职场跨文化交流》。她还在英国和中国为不同领域的公司和机构提供跨文化职场交流培训和咨询。培训领域包括跨文化冲突,问题解决,自我观念的文化差异以及对交流方式的影响,领导力话语等。

讲师介绍
董红波博士2014年在英国杜伦大学获得教育学博士学位。她的博士论文主要研究是宁波诺丁汉大学的中国教职员工们的跨文化经历。她曾在浙江万里学院为国际生开设《跨文化交际》课程,为中国学生开设《跨文化交际能力提升》课程。她熟知中英两国的教育体系和教学方法,并对学生事务管理有着丰富的经验。董红波博士还荣获过省市级各类荣誉,并在国内公开发表多篇研究论文。
