Rain in Athens (and other four poems)


Where might the rainy nights be

that cleanse the face and return it in the morning

wide open to a new adjective?


I took the streets with the thin skin

of black mud after rain

because I felt a thirst in the mouth.


Buildings evaporated in the night lights,

a drone coming from the city’s depths.

A beggar at the corner of Patission Street

lay down on the wet side walk,

one arm cut at the elbow

the other at the wrist.

His bare head scarred by an old burn

coming down his face like a tide.

He resembled an extra terrestrial

uncontrollably trembling in his scant clothes

on the wet slabs.

Grotesque movements of his arm stubs

as if to protect himself from fire

or to signal something apocryphal

from his two-dimensional world.


I know how cold the universe is

but I never cease to wonder.



Time


I don’t know how to count many things

not even the days a hyacinth brings back

between two stones every January.

I sit at the small kitchen table

that could barely accommodate us,

the mother, the father, five in all.

The mystery of space, then of time.

One by one they left.

Alone now, I cut the bread in the same place.

How many voices and laughs,

how many ritual motions it takes

to undo this void,

how much trial and error

to land on this earth’s speck of dust

in one of billions galaxies.

The rain is dancing on a rosemary bush.

I know that it doesn’t dance for me

or the blackbird launching tiny rainbows

from its glossy plumage.



I didn’t think


I didn’t think of Constantine Cavafy

or the familiar metaphor

what are we waiting for, gathered here in the market?

I didn’t think of Wystan Auden

or Ezra Pound

or Anna Akhmatova

and the cold absence of metaphor in the verse

In those years only the dead smiled

I didn’t think of Paul Celan

or George Seferis

or Wislawa Szymborska

or Zbigniew Herbert

or even Odysseus Elytis

or Czeslaw Milosz

or Joseph Brodsky

and the reason was

that I had been absorbed by a red-breasted robin

that had been absorbed by an insect

and the sun was setting

behind a transparent red cloud

absolute like life’s farce.



From Corinth to Athens


The highway goes east.

A mountain ridge from dinosaur skin on the left

the sea on the right, unoriginal.


A buzz of kilometers in the bus.

The road ties me to the world,

it makes me part of it.

After many years I learned

that roads have no return

that seasons come with their own vocabulary

and then disappear somewhere in the universe.


I’m looking at the cypresses through the window

as they pass like an unsynchronized movie

randomly bending by the wind.

Momentarily I think they bow to us

but I know that we are a passing detail

in a landscape that converses only with the wind and the rain.



Communication


It’s raining in Athens

and the city is putting on its mask

a little old from the 20th century,

somewhat worn out, a mask nonetheless,

forgotten ancient names, dates

that became street names before they faded.

Strangers running away from their small stories

like the superstitious run from ghosts.


The rain transforms the city into a metaphor

as the raindrops tap on the polished streets

their code that no one is receiving

but the rain persists

for the sake of a solitary bitter orange tree in the side walk

that shamelessly stands for the world

at the moment everyone is gone.

雅典的雨(外四首)


夜晚,哪里会有雨呢

它清洁(事物)表面并在早上归还

一个新的形容词由此变得更广义


因为我感到口干舌燥。

雨后,我就走到了街上

它们的表面铺了一层薄薄的黑淤泥


建筑物在夜晚的光线下升起蒸汽,

一架来自城市深处的无人机。

帕提森街拐角处,

一个乞丐躺在潮湿的人行道上,

一只手的肘部被割伤

另一个伤口在手腕处。

他光秃秃的头被一处旧烧伤留下了疤痕

像一道潮汐涌到了他的脸上。

他多像个外星人啊

在潮湿的石板上。

穿着单薄的衣服,无法控制颤抖

他以手臂做着怪诞的动作

好像是为了保护自己免受火灾

或者从他的二维世界里

发出一些难以通用的信号


我知道宇宙有多冷

但我从未停止过探寻。



时间


我不知道怎么数那么多的东西

包括风信子带回来的日子

两块石头之间的每年的一月份。

我坐在厨房的小桌子旁

它几乎无法容纳我们,

母亲,父亲,一共五个。

先是空间的奥秘,然后是时间的奥秘。

他们一个接一个地消逝了。

现在,我一个人在同一个地方切面包。

为了消除那空隙,

需要有多少声音和笑声,

需要有多少个程序和动议

尘埃降落在地球——

数十亿个星系中的一个行星

以及诗歌中不该缺乏的隐喻

在那些年里,只有死者微笑

我没想到保罗·策兰

或者乔治·塞弗里斯

或维斯瓦娃·辛波斯卡

或者兹比格涅夫·赫伯特

甚至奥德修斯·埃利蒂斯

或切斯瓦夫·米沃什

或者约瑟夫·布罗茨基

原因是

一只被昆虫吸收了的红胸知更鸟

迷惑了我

在透明的红云后面

从科林斯到雅典


这条高速公路往东走。

被风随意地吹得弯曲了。

我认为它们在向我们鞠躬

但我知道我们只是一个快速流动的事物

存在于一个只能与风和雨对话的风景中。



交流


雅典正在下雨

这座城市戴上了口罩

有点老化了,像从20世纪走来,

有点破旧,而且戴着道具,

被遗忘的古代的名字、日期

消失之前就成为了街道的名字。

陌生人逃离他们的繁琐俗务

就像从幽灵中逃出来的惊魂一样。


雨水拍打着抛光的街道

把这座城市变成了一个比喻

没有人收到它们的密码

但是雨还在下

人行道上一棵孤独的橘子树

孤勇且无奈地代表着世界

这个时候,所有人都走了。

About the Author:

    Yannis A. Phillis was born in Nauplion, Greece, in 1950. He is Engineering Professor at the Technical University of Crete in Chania where he was Rector for more than 12 years. He has published eight poetry collections in Greek, one in English, five novels, and several environmental and technical books. He has received the Harry Kurnitz Literary Award at UCLA twice and numerous awards in Greece and the US for his literary, environmental and scientific work. His poetry has appeared in literary magazines in Greek, English, German, Chinese and French. He is a member of the Greek PEN and Poets and Writers, USA, and Fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science.

译者简介:

    林巧儿,写格律诗词和现代诗,译诗评诗。她是混语版《国际诗歌翻译》季刊客座总编,《中国红馆》执行总编,已在美国、中国等地发表(出版)各类英文作品、英译(中译)作品 60 多万字,多次获得各类诗赛奖项如“人祖山”杯(人祖山管委会与中国诗歌学会合办)等。


 


About the Translator:

    Lina moon,is mainly engaged in creation of traditional Chinese metrical poetry and modern poetry, poetry translation and poetry review. She is the guest-editor of the guest editor of Rendition of International Poetry (multilingual) and the executive editor of large poetry society The Red Pavilion. She has published six more than hundred thousand words in magazines and newspapers in the United States, China and other places, including all Kinds of English work, translation works between Chinese and English. She has won some awards in various poetry competitions, such as the “Renzu Mountain” Cup (Jointly organized by Renzu Mountain Management Committee and the Chinese Poetry Society).
