A Tougher Journey? Adjusted Test Requirements for Travellers to China

Considering the recent surge of imported COVID-19 cases, since August 27, Chinese embassies have subsequently adjusted nuclear acid test requirements for people traveling from high-risk regions to China, making the long journey even tougher.

The updated policy, which would generally come in effect from September, covers a few European, North American, African and Asian nations, including the UK, Hungary, Serbia, Spain, Mexico, South Africa, Thailand, Singapore and Malaysia.

The new policy asks people to take a nuclear acid test in a different clinic 7 days before the flight, the original requirement of 'double tests' within 48 hours before the flight remains. 

In all these countries, Personal Health Monitoring Form, which checks 7-day-term individual temperatures and physical conditions, is a must before applying for the HDC green code.

Additional requirements for vaccinated people (medical check) have also been published by certain countries accordingly.

I01 European Countries

The UK (No Direct Flights)

For departure from September 9:

• Nucleic acid test 7 days before flight time

• Double tests (nucleic acid, IgM antibody) before flight time

• Double tests at the transit airport

• 7 days of self-monitoring at home, Personal Health Monitoring Form needs to be signed

Those who had activated vaccines would need additional N-Protein detection to get HDC green codes.

Direct Flights. 

Only 1 transit country to avoid intravenous infection

• Nucleic acid test 7 days before flight time

  ( Test must be taken at a clinic in the same district on the list recognized by Chinese embassy)

• Double tests (nucleic acid, IgM antibody) 2 days before flight time

• Double tests at transit airport

• 7 days of self-monitoring at home
  

• Personal Health Monitoring Form

Those who took inactivated vaccines can only get 'double tests' after 14 days.

Those who had activated vaccines would need additional N-Protein detection to get HDC green codes.

Vaccinated:

• Proof of vaccination

South Africa

Direct flight:

• 14 days quarantine for Temporary business visitors/crew etc., 21 days quarantine for Chinese project personnel

• The first double test 7 days before the flight

• Be under closed-loop management 4 days before the flight

• The second double test before boarding

Transit flight:

• 14 days quarantine for Temporary business visitors/crew etc., 21 days quarantine for Chinese project personnel

• The first double test 7 days before the flight

• The second double test 48 hours before boarding

I04 Asia

Malaysia

• Get the 1st nucleic acid test (from different clinics) 7 days before flight time

• Double tests (nucleic acid, IgM antibody) before flight time

• Double tests at transit airport 

• 21 days of self-quarantine

• Personal Health Monitoring Form needs to be signed

If you belong to a Malaysia-based Chinese company, your supervisor needs to sign a form. 

If you are an international student, your school needs to sign a form. Those who had activated vaccines would need additional N-Protein detection to get HDC green codes.

Thailand

From September 6

• Get the first nucleic acid test (from different clinics) 7 days before flight time 

• Double tests (nucleic acid, IgM antibody) before flight time

• Double tests at transit airport. 

• 7 days of self-monitoring at home

• Personal Health Monitoring Form

If you belong to a Thailand-based Chinese company, you need to be in 21-day quarantine previous to your flight, effective proof from the company will be needed while applying for the green code.

Those who had activated vaccine would need additional N-Protein detection to get HDC green codes.

If infected before, you can apply for HDC green code after 3 months by providing X-ray or CT. (Children under the age of 14 and pregnant women can be exempted.)
