对话Litmus:万物互联的时代终会到来

对于很多创始人来说,生活和工作的边界是很难分开的,比如G5这次的采访。7月底,Litmus Automation的联合创始人及COO John Younes才刚和妻子举办婚礼不久,在度蜜月期间抽空回答了我们的问题。

有人说物联网(IoT)是一项技术革命,它能将短距离移动资料收发器嵌入到我们日常生活所需任意工具或者任何大型建筑当中,特别在工业领域的应用更是让人惊叹。
不久之前,硅谷极具创新性的技术公司之一,Litmus Automation作为G5xPnP联合投资的工业物联网企业代表,其联合创始人&COO John Younes接受了我们的采访。
John 其实对中国不算特别陌生,他和Litmus的另一个联合创始人,也是CEO VatsalShah 都曾参加过 2012年至2013年浙江大学发起的“全球创业计划”工商管理专业和法国里昂学院(EM Lyon)创业研究项目。2013年1月还在上海Cambio Coffee做过短期创业导师。
对John来说,创业是一个目标,一个过程,一种经历,也是一种坚持。
Litmus虽然是John第一次创业,但这不是一场无准备之仗。似乎在成为一个创业者之前,他所有的经历都是为此做准备。他负责制定Litmus的市场推广和营销战略,除了坚定的目标,不间断的学习,不懈的努力,还有一个全球化的开放眼光。
正因如此,Litmus从2013年创立,在短短几年时间获得了无数业内赞誉,更被Gartner评为2018年的物联网平台中的“Cool Vendor”。
G5:When and what makes you to became an entrepreneur? Any stories about your experience as a serial entrepreneur.
为什么会来创业呢?真正让您选择创业的原因是什么?
John Younes:“I have always had an interest in Entrepreneurship, and even during University I would run my own summer businesses instead of getting a typical summer job. These were very successful and provided me with the understanding and base skills of what it takes to be an entrepreneur and business owner. After Graduating, I was not interested in joining a larger company, and looked for opportunities to continue on an entrepreneurial path. I applied for the Global Entrepreneurship program, which takes you to 3 different Countries (France, China and US) with classmates from different backgrounds and nationalities. This brought me to meeting my business partner and launching Litmus 5 years ago.”
我一直对创业都挺感兴趣的,毕业之后我对去大企业任职没什么兴趣,一直寻找能继续创业的机会。所以我就申请了一个跨境硕士项目——由里昂商学院、浙江大学和普渡大学发起的“全球创业管理项目”,它会带着你去三个完全不同的国家(法国,中国,美国)体验,我的同学来自不同的国家、背景多样。正是这个经历也让我在5年前遇见了我现在的商业伙伴,并成功创办了Litmus。

G5:What is the biggest achievement and fun for entrepreneurship?
创业给您最大的成就和乐趣是什么?
John Younes:“The biggest achievement and fun for entrepreneurship is seeing your hard work materialize in helping to build something successful. When you see your hard work pay off, there is nothing more rewarding. Also, seeing others join in your same journey and vision, and everyone working towards a common goal is something special.”
在对我来说,创业的最大成就和乐趣,是看到你的努力能成功的具象化成很多事物。 当你看到你的努力工作得到回报时,没有什么比这更有价值了。 还有,当看到志同道合的人加入到你的团队当中,你们拥有共同的目标和使命, 并为此努力奋斗的时候,也让创业变得更加特别。

G5:What is the biggest difficulty you have encountered in starting a business? How is it overcome?
在创业当中您遇到的最大的困难是什么?是如何克服的?
John Younes:“One of the biggest challenges in starting a business is uncertainty. You never know how things are going to turn out, or if you are on the right path. It is important to have confidence and trust in your ability and strategy, but at the same time you need to be open to change if something is not working. That is one of the benefits of being a startup is that you can make quick changes and adjustments, so it is important to use that to your benefit.”
创业最大的困难之一,是创造一个完全未知的新业务。你完全不能确定市场如何发展,你是否走在正确的道路上。所以自信非常重要,信任自己的能力和策略,同时也要用开放态度,审时度势,根据市场情况及时调整战略。初创者的最大的好处就是能够迅速应变和调整,学会如何利用这点非常重要。
John在上学期间,会利用暑期做点小“生意”,而不是别人眼中典型的零工。也正是因为假期这些零碎的“经商”过程,累计了宝贵的创业相关经验。让他更好的理解企业家心态,掌握了很多创业者、企业家的基本技能。
Litmus Automation于2013年创建于硅谷,他们的核心产品Loop,是物联网的中间云平台,2017年他们上线了LoopEdge软件,这是世界上第一个面向物联网网关和工业PC的边缘级平台。
对于物联网的未来发展,John很乐观,也有他自己的理解。
借助Loop,用户可以安全地将任何类型的硬件、设备、传感器或机器连接到网络,并实时将收集的数据集成到任何第三方软件应用程序或企业系统
G5:What’s your understanding of IoT, what is the global development trend? How about Chinese market?
您对于IoT的理解是什么?全球发展趋势是什么样的?怎样看待中国市场?
John Younes:“IoT is a very general term and trend, and for us we focus specifically on the Industrial side of IoT, and mainly within Manufacturing. For us, we see a huge trend now towards Manufacturers looking to implement IoT or “Industry 4.0” solutions. China is no different as one of the larger manufacturing economies. As wages continue to rise, China’s manufacturing economy is needing to add more automation and operational efficiency in order to combat these higher costs. IoT offers a benefit to do so in many ways from lowering downtime of machines, increased workforce tracking and production, increased visibility over production and output, and many more.”
IoT现在是很流行的名词和趋势,Litmus专注于工业,特别是制造业领域IoT。我们看到了在制造业IoT的实施、应用或工业4.0解决方案巨大流行趋势。中国作为全球最大的工业制造国也不例外。人工成本不断升高,中国制造业经济需要增加更多自动化生产,提高经营效率,去应对、抵消越来越高的成本。从降低设备停机时间,增加劳动力跟踪和生产,提高生产和输出的可见性等多方面来看,IoT在许多方面都能提供好处。

John Younes:“Litmus Automation’s ambition is to be the most complete IoT solution for helping manufacturing companies globally enter the digital era and Industry 4.0.”

John 5年之前就来过中国,和G5XPNP的缘分可能从那时就开始了。
G5:How does it feel when you came to Hangzhou for “Global Entrepreneurship Program "in 2012 , why? What attracts you to Chinese market after 5 years?
那么来中国参加“全球创业管理项目”感觉如何?为什么会在这个时候选择中国市场呢?
John Younes:“Studying in China was a great experience and provided exposure to one of the largest markets in the world in terms of how business is conducted. I was able to make valuable connections, which have helped us expand into this market 5 years later. China is very attractive for Litmus, as it is one of the largest manufacturing economies in the world and is ripe for the type of technology that we provide.”
在中国的学习经历非常棒,也让我意识到,中国拥有众多复杂的商业模式,是全球最大市场之一。我在这里建立了很多有价值的资源人脉,这都能够帮助Litmus在创立5年后进入中国市场。中国对于Litmus来说很有吸引力,因为它是世界上最大的制造业经济体之一,并且针对我们提供的技术服务,拥有成熟的应用市场和条件。

G5:What is the difference between China and the United States in the entrepreneurial environment or the entrepreneurial/business model? What are the advantages and disadvantages of each?
在您看来中美在创业环境上,或者创业模式上,有什么不同?各自的利弊是怎样的?
John Younes:“The entrepreneurial landscape in China and the US have some similarities, but also many differences. These are 2 of the largest economies in the world, so there is plenty of opportunity in both markets. In the US, it is easier to navigate as a result of flexible government policies and low language barriers. For China, it is important to have a local partner that can help navigate the market and obviously be able to speak the local language.”
中国和美国的创业整体来看还是有些相似的地方的,当然也有很多不同。毕竟这是世界上最大的两个经济体,因此这两个市场都有很多机会。 在美国,因为其较为灵活的政府政策和较低的语言障碍,创业者的操作空间更大,企业运行更为简单。而在中国,更重要的是拥有一个能够帮助引导国内市场的本地合作伙伴,最起码语言要没有任何障碍。
G5:How about G5? What’s the impression of us? What kind of activities do you hope to receive in G5 or what kind of activities do you expect? Any advice for our development?
G5怎么样?后期您希望在这里获得怎样的帮助或者期待怎样的活动?
John Younes:“We have had a great impression and experience working with G5 to date. G5 has provided us with funding, along with Plug and Play, G5's partner in Silicon Valley, as well as connection opportunities with various strategic partners and customers in China, while also providing a strong reputation and support. These are the kind of activities we expect, and another area that I would add would be for G5 to provide access to more institutional funding, whether through VC partners or strategics.
目前为止,和G5共事的感觉很棒,我们对你们的印象非常好。 G5为我们对接了很多资源,包括和硅谷的Plug and Play一起为Litmus提供资金,帮我们建立了国内众多战略合作伙伴关系、客户关系,同时也提供了良好的声誉背书和支持。 这些都是我们期望的活动,未来希望G5能提供更多的机构资金渠道,帮助我们连接更多VC合作伙伴或者战略合作伙伴。
其实不仅仅是物联网领域,任何领域的国外初创企业,想要在中国开辟市场,都会遇到同样的难题。
可以毫不夸张的说,在中国做好开拓的第一步,是找到合适的本土化兼全球化的Partner,这能让你成功一半。

除了工作,John还是高尔夫发烧友,只要有时间就会泡在高尔夫球场,对他来说没有什么比这更能缓解压力。

G5:How to balance work and marriage life? Can you talk a little bit about moving to SF?
我们得知您最近刚刚结婚,即将搬去旧金山生活,会开始新的阶段,您如何看待创业和生活的关系?
John Younes:“Balancing work and marriage life is very important to me. I would not be where I am today without a supportive wife, but it is also important to still put time aside to do things together without work interfering.We have decided to move together to SF, as it will be a good opportunity for me to continue to help Litmus to grow from our headquarters and working my closely with our CEO/Co-Founder Vatsal. We are looking forward to this new adventure and the warmer weather!“
是的,如何平衡工作和新婚生活对我来说是很重要。很显然我成为今天的我离不开我妻子对我工作的支持,但预留一些没有工作打扰的时间同样非常重要。因为Litmus总部在旧金山,我们决定一起搬到这里,能更好的帮助企业发展,也离CEO &联合创始人Vatsal更近一些。我们很期待着这次新的冒险和温暖的天气!

G5:Any advice you have for G5’s entrepreneurs?
对于G5的创业者,您有什么样的建议或者想说的话?
John Younes:“Just get started! It is important to plan, but at some point you just need to get started. Fail fast, adapt and improve and keep going."
开始就好!计划很重要,但是很大程度上你需要迈出第一步。迅速试错,迅速调整、提高。以及继续坚持。
