Org. Setting and Reporting
The position is located in the Africa Section of the Communications Campaigns Service in the Strategic Communications Division, and is for a period of three (3) months with an opportunity for extension for an additional three (3) months depending on the needs of the department. The Africa Section highlights initiatives by Africa, the UN and the international community agenda to promote the continent's development. The section produces Africa Renewal magazine, an authoritative quarterly distributed to over 45,000 subscribers around the world. We also maintain an online presence, including a website, social media platforms, and online newsletter providing African news and analysis. We provide public information support to our designated clients, namely the UN Office of the Special Adviser on Africa (OSAA), the New Partnership for Africa's Development (NEPAD), and the UN Economic Commission for Africa (ECA). We disseminate Africa and UN-related content for publication to hundreds of media outlets around the world.
The Internship is UNPAID and full-time. Interns work five days per week (35-40 hours) under the supervision of a staff member.
Responsibilities
Duties may include the following:
Identifying, researching, drafting and editing content (text, photos, documents and multimedia) for online publication (website and social media)
Maintaining content on Africa Renewal Online website and other online presences according to established policies;
Creating and editing short videos for posting on social media and the website;
Assisting in archiving old editions of Africa Renewal magazine, converting some editions into PDFs;
Assisting in checking the website for broken pages or pages that are inconsistent with the design of the website;
Proposing new projects for the website and social media platforms and identifying opportunities to reach a wider audience;
Monitoring the website and social media channel usage through the use of various statistical tools;
Media monitoring, fact-checking and related research work for Africa Renewal stories;
Maintaining and updating media and subscription mailing lists for the Section and assisting in distributing various information products;
Performing additional tasks that may be assigned by the Chief of the Section from time to time.

Education
To qualify for an internship with the United Nations New York Headquarters Internship
Programme, Department of Public Information, applicants must at the time of application meet one of the following requirements:
Applicants must: (a) be enrolled in a graduate school programme in journalism,communication, media studies, filmmaking, international relations or related field (second university degree or equivalent, or higher); or (b) be enrolled in the final academic year of a first university degree programme in journalism, communication, media studies, filmmaking, international relations or related field (minimum Bachelor's level or equivalent); or (c) have graduated with a university degree in journalism, communication, media studies, filmmaking, international relations or related field (as defined in (a) or (b) above) and, if selected, must commence the internship within a one year period of graduation.
Be computer literate in standard word processing and spreadsheets software applications such as Microsoft Word and Excel or similar.
Have a demonstrated keen interest in the work of the United Nations and have a personal commitment to the ideals of the Charter; and
Have a demonstrated ability to successfully interact with individuals of different cultural backgrounds and beliefs, which include willingness to try and understand and be tolerant of differing opinions and views.
Work Experience
Applicants are not required to have professional work experience for participation in the Programme.
Languages
English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. For the internship, fluency in English is required. Fluency in French is highly desirable.
