No.1 Org. Setting and Reporting

The United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) is the leading global environmental authority that sets the global environmental agenda, promotes the coherent implementation of the environmental dimension of sustainable development within the United Nations system and serves as an authoritative advocate for the global environment.

The UNEP/Latin America & the Caribbean Office located in Panama City works closely with the 33 countries of the region - including 16 small island developing States - with a population of about 588 million people. The office works to serve the needs of the region and its activities are integrated into the work programmes approved by the United Nations Environment Assembly of UNEP. The Latin America & the Caribbean Office has, under its auspices, two Sub-Regional Offices - one for the Caribbean in Kingston Jamaica and the other one for the Southern Cone located in Montevideo, Uruguay.

UNEPt’s Caribbean Sub-Regional Office in Jamaica opened in February 2016, coordinates and reports on activities of UNEP and works in close partnership with all Divisions, UN Country Teams and external partners. It leads UNEP’s collaboration with other UN agencies, research institutions and non-governmental organizations in the Caribbean, towards achieving internationally agreed targets. It has a small but growing team, including an Office Head, a Programme Officer, a Team Assistant, two UN Volunteers and an Intern. In addition, it expects to host project and programme staff members who are active in the sub-region (e.g. Global Environment Facility Task Managers).

Such coordination and sub-regional presence enhances inter-divisional and inter-agency programmes and projects aimed at addressing global and sub-regional issues efficiently and effectively - and to support countries in managing their environmental management priorities. UNEP's Strategic Regional Presence Policy and global and regional agreements related to Small Island Developing States, such as the SAMOA Pathway, provide strategic guidance for the work of the Sub-Regional Office.
