Born in the forest,

它们在森林里出生，

they stay in the forest,

也就在森林里呆着；

while Mum and Dad bring fresh meals straight from the ocean.

They can hear the waves,

they can even smell the spray,

but they have no idea what it looks like.

These chicks won't have their first splash in the ocean

until they're three months old,

when they'll finally set off on their first fishing trip, alone.

1,500 miles from the nearest continent,

New Zealand is beyond the reach of most mammals.

Marine mammals aside,

the only ones that did succeed,

before humans arrived, had wings.

Bats.

蝙蝠。

This is the short-tailed bat.

这是短尾蝙蝠。

It roosts in tree cavities and comes out at night to feed.

它们栖息在树洞里，晚上外出觅食。

So far, so normal.

这一切看起来都如此正常。

But these bats have been living the island life

但是，这些蝙蝠过着岛屿生活的时间

far too long not to have become a little ''different''.

实在太过漫长了，于是难免会变得（与最初的样子）有些不同。

And they're not the only ones.

Wetas are primitive relatives of the locust,

沙螽是蝗虫原始的亲戚（远亲），

but they can't fly.

但是它们不会飞。
