Timber and Forestry in Qing China: From the Dual Perspectives of Economic and Environmental History

Abstract

In the Qing period, China's population tripled, and the flurry of new development generated unprecedented demand for timber. Standard environmental histories have often depicted this as an era of reckless deforestation and ecological degradation. This comprehensive new study shows that the reality was more complex: as old-growth forests were cut down, new economic arrangements emerged to develop renewable timber resources. Timber and Forestry in Qing Chinatraces the trade routes that connected population centers of the Lower Yangzi Delta to timber supplies on China's southwestern frontier. It documents innovative property rights systems and economic incentives that convinced landowners to invest years in growing trees. Delving into rare archives to reconstruct business histories, the book considers both the formal legal mechanisms and the informal interactions that helped balance economic profit with environmental management. Of driving concern were questions of sustainability: How to maintain a reliable source of timber across decades and centuries? And how to sustain a business network across a thousand miles? This carefully constructed study makes a major contribution to Chinese economic and environmental history and to world-historical discourses on resource management, early modern commercialization, and sustainable development.

Meng Zhang

Timber and Forestry in Qing China: Sustaining the Market

Meng Zhang is Assistant Professor of History at Vanderbilt University. She received her Ph.D. in History from UCLA in 2017 and B.A. in Economics from Peking University in 2010. She is particularly interested in the economic and environmental transformations in late imperial China and transnational dynamics in the rise of global capitalism. Her first book, Timber and Forestry in Qing China: Sustaining the Market (University of Washington Press, 2021), reveals the complex reality of timber trade and resource management during the flurry of commercial development in Qing China.

Pengsheng Qiu

Professor Chiu received his doctoral degree (June 1995) from the Department of History of National Taiwan University. He was an Assistant Research Fellow (1996–2004) and an Associate Research Fellow (2004–2014) of the Institute of History and Philology, Academia Sinica. From 2012 to 2018 he was Professor of the Department of History, Chinese University Hong Kong, and henceforth became as Distinguished Professor in Shanghai Jiao-Tong University.  Inspired primarily by institutional economic history and economic anthropology, his research analyzes the market evolution, the commercial law, and their related topics in Ming-Qing China (1368-1911). It investigates the evolutionary trajectory of the market in Ming-Qing China and argues that commercial law in this period was an important factor in the development of the Chinese economy. It aims to challenge various sorts of “Western-centrism” that prevail in academic circles while at the same time helping us to understand in more nuanced and detailed fashion the course of modern Chinese history.  His webpage may be found at https://sjtu.academia.edu/PengshengChiu.
