Zhi-Quan (Tom) Luo (Fellow, IEEE and SIAM) received the B.S. degree in applied mathematics from Peking University, Beijing, China, and the Ph.D. degree in operations research from MIT, Cambridge, MA, USA, in 1989. From 1989 to 2003, he held a faculty position with the Department of ECE, McMaster University, Canada. He held a tier-1 Canada Research Chair in information processing from 2001 to 2003. After that, he has been a Full Professor with the ECE Department, University of Minnesota and held an endowed ADC Chair in digital technology. He is currently the Vice President (Academic) of the Chinese University of Hong Kong, Shenzhen, China and the Director of Shenzhen Research Institute of Big Data (SRIBD). He is a fellow of SIAM and is selected to the Royal Society of Canada. He received four best paper awards from the IEEE Signal Processing Society, one best paper award from EUSIPCO, the Farkas Prize from INFORMS and the prize of Paul Y. Tseng Memorial Lectureship in Continuous Optimization as well as some best paper awards from international conferences. He has authored or coauthored more than 300 refereed papers, books, and special issues. He has served as an Associate Editor for many internationally recognized journals and the Editor-in-Chief for the IEEE TRANSACTIONS ON SIGNAL PROCESSING. His research mainly addresses mathematical issues in information sciences, with particular focus on the design, analysis and applications of large-scale optimization algorithms.

Learning to maximize a convex quadratic function with application to intelligent reflection surface for wireless communication

Abstract:

In this talk we consider learningand optimizing a rank-2 convex quadratic function over K discrete variables. This problem arises from optimal design of a passive beamformer for intelligentreflecting surface (IRS) in order to maximize the overall channel strength. When the quadratic function (or channel state information) is known, we propose a linear time algorithm that is capable of reaching a near-optimalsolution with an approximation ratio of (1+cos(π/K))/2, i.e., its performanceis at least 75% of the global optimum for K ≥ 3. Furthermore we develop methods to learnand optimize the beamforming strategy when the quadratic function is unknown(i.e. in the absence of channel state information).

Petar M. Djurić

Petar M. Djurić (Fellow, IEEE and EURASIP) received his B.S. and M.S. degrees in Electrical Engineering from the University of Belgrade, in 1981 and 1986,respectively, and his Ph.D. degree in Electrical Engineering from the University of Rhode Island (1990). From 1981 to 1986, Prof. Djurić was a Research Associate with the Institute of Nuclear Sciences,Vinča, Belgrade. Since 1990, he has been with Stony Brook University, where he is SUNY Distinguished Professor and Chair ofthe Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering. His research has been in the area of signal and information processing with primary interests in the theory of signal modeling, detection, and estimation; machine learning; Monte Carlo-based methods; distributed signal processing; and applications of the theory in a wide range of disciplines. Prof. Djurić has served on numerous technical committees for the IEEE and hasbeen invited to lecture at universities in the United States and overseas. His SPS activities include Member-at Large of the SPS Board of Governors (2011-2013), Vice President-Finance (2006-09), Area Editor of Special Issues - IEEE Signal Processing Magazine (2002-05), Associate Editor - IEEE Transactionson Signal Processing (1994-96 and 2003-05), Chair - SPS Signal ProcessingTheory and Methods Technical Committee (2005-06), and Treasurer - SPSConference Board (2001-03). He has been on the Editorial Board of several journals and has served on numerous committees of professional conferences and workshops. He was the first Editor-in-Chief of the IEEE Transactions on Signal and Information Processing over Networks (2015-2018). Prof. Djurić was a recipient of the IEEE Signal Processing Magazine Best Paper Award in 2007 and the European Association for Signal Processing (EURASIP) Technical Achievement Award in 2012. Prof. Djurić is a Fellow of IEEE and a Fellow of the EURASIP.

Predictive Analytics based on Data Acquired by Backscatter-based RF Sensor Networks

Abstract:

We present a setting where physical objectsare cyber-connected and are tagged with bateryless RF tags for identification and tracking. The RF tags use RF backscatter for tag-to-tag communication. They also use this communication to sense activities and interactions around them.We explain how these RF tags operate and how they collect information from the environment via channel measurements based only on passive backscattering. We then show how these measurements are used for predictive analytics invarious applications.

Guanrong Chen

Prof. Guanrong CHEN (Life Fellow, IEEE) received his MS degree in computer science from Sun Yat-sen University, China, in 1981,and his PhD degree in applied mathematics from Texas A&M University, USA,in 1987. He has been a chair professor and the founding director of the Centrefor Chaos and Complex Networks at City University of Hong Kong, China since 2000;before that, he was a tenured professor at the University of Houston, USA.Prof. CHEN received the State Natural Science Award of China in 2008, 2012, and 2016. He was elected as an IEEE fellow in 1997, and is now a life fellow. He was awarded the 2011 Euler Gold Medal, Russia and conferred honorary doctorates bythe Saint Petersburg State University, Russia, in 2011 and by the University ofLe Havre, France, in 2014. He is a member of the Academy of Europe and a fellow of the World Academy of Sciences. He has been a highly cited researcher in engineering since 2009 according to Thomson Reuters/Clarivate. Currently, he is the Editor-in-Chief of Int J Bifurc Chaos. His main research pursuit is in nonlinear system control and dynamics, as well as complex networks.

Title of the Speech:

Pinning Control of Complex Networks

Abstract:

In this talk, we will introduce the notion of “pinningcontrol” for general complex networks. We will first discuss thecontrollability and its measure of directed networks from the pinning controlperspective. We will then describe the basic criterion, algorithm andcharacteristics for single-input single-output (SISO) networks, and finallypresent the corresponding results for multi-input multi-output (MIMO) networks.
