"Artificial Intelligence for Food-Energy-Water Nexus Applications"

ABSTRACT

Food-Energy-Water nexus (FEWs) has been identified as one of the key grand challenges in the 21st century by The National Academy of Sciences, Engineering and Medicine. Artificial intelligence (AI) has demonstrated its great potential to address complex problems involving both sustainability and resilience of Food/Energy/Water Systems. Here, I present some applications of machine learning and deep learning to address some challenges in FEWs applications. My talk includes quantitate structure-activity relationship models for contaminant control, membrane design for water reuse and nutrient recovery, membrane system operational performance optimization, algal biomass production for biofuel and CO2 capture, and H2 production from photocatalysis. All of these successful applications demonstrate that the potential of artificial intelligence in solving the challenges in complex and dynamic systems.

"Smart systems engineering contributing to an intelligent carbon-neutral future"

ABSTRACT

In light of the pressing environmental and climate change challenges, smart approaches are indispensable for sustainable development towards a net-zero future. Advances in artificial intelligence (AI), especially machine learning (ML), provide an enormous variety of smart tools for processing complex data and information generated from experimental and computational research, as well as industrial applications. Different ML strategies can be utilized at each stage of material characterization, property prediction, synthesis, and theory paradigm discovery to accelerate the whole development process. Ultimately, these smart technologies could enable autonomous materials discovery, system design, process optimization, and all aspects of the model industry, thereby facilitating improvement in energy efficiency, emission reduction, and eventually the realization of carbon neutrality target.
